I went to see Joan Baez with my parents last weekend. She played a free concert at Stern Grove in San Francisco. We found a spot to sit between two huge redwood trees. My dad kept squeezing my arm in excitement and sang along to all the songs -- it was so cute. Every one in the audience seemed to have a really emotional connection to her music. ( Read more... )

it was actually pretty moving to see that slumdog swept the oscars. even though i normally find the pomp and circumstance of awards ceremonies off putting, i couldn't help but feel really excited about these winners. i love that when the producer accepted the oscar for best picture, the whole cast came on stage including the little kids they'd ( Read more... )

i watched the inauguration this morning with my parents. my mom was so happy and so excited that she was jumping up and down on her arthritic ankle with joy.

there is a friendly old homeless dude who stands on the street corner by my office and sings sappy love songs. he is there every single day rain or shine and sings at the top of his lungs for the morning office crowds. he sings so horrifyingly off key that it is often impossible to decipher. every now and then i'll recognize an old beatles song, ( Read more... )

this happened last night.
i have very mixed feelings about this. i am grateful that i will never understand the amount of rage that grows in a community that has endured violent oppression at the hands of the police for so long.

last night i ended up at a totally huge mega extreme super star bollywood event in oakland. my friend sanjeev's parents scored vip tickets to the "unforgettable tour" -- a musical dance extravaganza starring india's biggest movie icons. sanjeev took me along to keep him company for what was sure to be a super lame, cheesy show full of lip syncing ( Read more... )
