slumdog millionaire
it was actually pretty moving to see that slumdog swept the oscars. even though i normally find the pomp and circumstance of awards ceremonies off putting, i couldn't help but feel really excited about these winners. i love that when the producer accepted the oscar for best picture, the whole cast came on stage including the little kids they'd recruited from the actual slums of bombay. how surreal for them to be given a standing ovation by hollywood's royalty -- actors and actresses that had provided them with fantasy and escape from their real life of poverty. i wonder what will be next for them. and i wonder how this renewed american interest in india will play out.
i grew up surrounded by white kids who believed that indians were all like those in temple of doom. i hope now that kind of portrayal is a thing of the past.
