“How was the party the other day?” Masaki asked Sho with his most innocent voice as he wandered into his brother’s room a week after the party was actually held. Till now he waited patiently for the older boy to say something - anything - about it but it was in vain. Sho never stayed silent like this about anything. It was as if he wanted to avoid the topic and it just added to the constantly growing dark anxiety in Masaki’s heart.
Sho turned away his eyes from his computer screen for a brief moment only before resuming his work on his last report for the school’s newspaper.
“It was quite boring actually” he said and shrugged.
Masaki shuddered at that tone. He heard that enough during their first year of living together. It said ‘Leave me alone!’ Sho didn’t use that tone with him a long time… He tried to reason it with the fact that his brother was busy at the moment - he actually admired Sho for how seriously he took his job at the school’s paper - and he didn’t actually mean to sound like that yet Masaki couldn’t help but felt hurt… He walked out the room, harboring his dejected feelings.
“Ne, Sho-chan!” he turned back from the door. It was Sunday after all, they should go out for a date probably…, he thought hopefully. “Do you want to…?” he started to ask but he was interrupted by the older boy’s ringing phone.
Sho looked at the caller ID.
“Moshi-moshi!...” he said with a smile and as he was answering the call he went to the door and closed it in Masaki’s face without sparing as much as a short glance to the younger boy…
Masaki stared at the closed door for a while, trying to suppress the painful feelings that washed over him.
“It’s okay, there’s no need to overreact something like this… It’s completely normal to wish for privacy for a phone call…” he mumbled under his breath as he walked back to his own room, locking himself up for the rest of the day…
“Hey, Ma-chan! How are you recently?” Ohno asked cheerfully as the taller boy slid into the booth of the family restaurant where the artist student sat together with Nino, Jun and Toma.
“I’m fine, thanks” the future vet grinned back at his friends.
Ever since all of them graduated from high school, they held little get-togethers such as this in every two or three weeks.
“Good to hear that” Jun commented as he sipped on his juice. “And how’s…?”
“Oh, oh! I brought you the game I promised the other time! Here!” Toma interrupted his boyfriend and pulled out the said object from his bag to hand it to his friend.
“Oh, thank you!” Masaki’s eyes lit up. “I was waiting for ages to play this!” he cheered happily.
Jun groaned and stared at his boyfriend disapproving.
“There they go again…” he mumbled and sighed.
Every second time they met, they ended up in a quarrel between Nino, Toma and Masaki about video-games. Like now, Nino immediately jumped in his friends’ conversation. Ohno chuckled at Jun’s reaction. A part of him understood him, but he didn’t really mind it. He knew from the beginning how much his boyfriend loved gaming so as long as Nino was happy, so was he. He looked at the skinny boy with a fond smile but decided to save Jun from his despair - for a while at least cause it was impossible to ban that three from talking about their favorite topic.
“So, Ma-chan! When will Sho arrive? I thought you’ll come together, though…” he interrupted the on-going conversation.
Everyone went silent and looked at Masaki expectantly. It was hard to miss the faint sad look that flashed in the boy’s eyes even if it was just for a mere second.
“Oh… he’s probably not coming. He’s really busy recently. He became the best reporter at the Keio Guardian. Look at this, he wrote this in latest issue!” he quickly searched through his bag and pulled out a copy of the said university newspaper and pushed it toward his friends to make them read Sho’s article. Ohno, Jun and Toma started to read obediently - and curiously. On the other hand, Nino eyed his best friend seriously.
“Hey!... Everything’s okay with the two of you?” he asked whispered and leaned closer to the taller boy.
“Of course! Why do you ask?” the taller boy said quickly - too quickly.
Nino frowned, obviously dissatisfied wit the answer. If he thought about it better, the taller boy was rather gloomy recently and he could only guess that the reason behind it was Sho… He sighed a little…
“Anyway, I’m all ears if you wanna talk about it, ‘kay?” he said on the same whispered tone before leant over Ohno’s shoulder to catch a glimpse of the article in question. “Now, let me see what that smart-ass wrote!” he said and pulled the paper out of their hands…
“Aniki! Okaeri!” Masaki greeted his brother when he arrived home the next day during dinner and smiled at him brightly.
“Tadaima…” Sho mumbled under his breath, looked at the younger boy briefly.
“Sho-kun, come and eat!” Ayako-san smiled at him too and got up to grab a plate for his step-son.
“No, it’s okay, I ate already with my club’s senpais… I’m going up… to study” he said looking shortly at his father who was busy reading the evening paper and didn’t even seem to hear that his son arrived home. Seeing this, Sho just turned out the door and went to his room.
“Thanks for the food!” Masaki blurted out shooting up from his chair immediately when he saw this and rushed after his brother.
“Sho-chan!” he called for the older boy as he opened the door to Sho’s room.
The older boy stopped unbuttoning his shirt half way and turned to him surprised.
“Masaki… What is it?” he asked looking at him with a raised brow.
The younger by stepped in and closed the door, silently locking it behind him before walking up to Sho.
“Why didn’t you come yesterday? We missed you… I missed you…” he whispered and with faint blush coloring his cheeks he reached his hand out to finish unbuttoning the rest of Sho’s shirt.
The older boy’s eyes widened when he realized what was going on. He grabbed Masaki’s wrists when he wanted to push the shirt off his shoulders.
“Don’t play with the fire, baby-boy! They’re home…” he whispered meaningfully.
“Then… we… just… have to… be… silent…” Masaki replied silently, pressing small pecks up to Sho’s neck, cheeks and chin till he reached his lips and kissed him properly, his playful tongue seeking entrance to the latter’s mouth…
Sho couldn’t hold back a groan and opened up his lips, soon he took over the lead of their kiss, earning small, throaty moans from his boyfriend. A smirk appeared on his lips at those sounds. God, he loved hearing those! He loved this boy in his arms… He quickly opened his eyes at that thought and stared straight into Masaki’s soft brown eyes, slightly clouded with love and lust.
“Someone has a really bad influence on you…” he said with a seductive smirk and pushed the younger boy down onto his bed. “Then try to keep your sexy voice at the lowest, baby-boy…” he grinned before dove in for another breathtaking kiss after he pulled the boy’s T-shirt off…
“Ne, Sho-chan! Look at this!” Masaki burst into the older boy’s room a week later, pushing a flyer into his face, too close to actually be able to read it.
“You know, I can’t see it if you trying to stuff it down my throat…” Sho chuckled and took the said paper from his boyfriend. “Summer festival?...” he asked and looked at the younger boy who looked back at him with hopeful, puppy-eyes.
“It’s on next Saturday. Can we go? Pretty please?” he asked or rather pleaded.
Sho felt a little bad seeing his beloved pleading as if he was thinking he wouldn’t agree otherwise. Knowing that he was neglecting him again it wasn’t surprising at all…
“Sure, why not?” he agreed nodding and smiled at Masaki.
“Really?” the younger asked back with beaming eyes. “Thank you, Sho-chan!” he said throwing his arms around the older student’s neck and pressed their lips together. “I’ll call the guys too and we can meet up with them there… Okay?” he asked with a bright smile.
“Sure, baby, anything you want” Sho said patting his boyfriend’s waist gently.
“Yay! Thank you!” the boy cheered happily and skipped out the room after pecking Sho’s lips one more time…
“Sorry, babe, something came up…” Sho said, looking at the younger boy guiltily.
“Wha… what do you mean something came up?” the other boy asked back, feeling the panic arise in his heart.
“It’s nothing serious. I just have to take care of something so I can’t go together with you. But I definitely will meet up with you there. I’ll try to hurry as much as possible” Sho said cupping Masaki’s face in his palms. “Be pretty as always and we’ll watch the fireworks together at midnight, okay?”
“You promise?” he asked with watery eyes.
“Yeah, I promise, babe” the older boy said pecking his beloved’s lips softly. “I have to go now. I see you later tonight, ‘kay?”
“Okay” Masaki said nodding, he was sad but the thought of watching the fireworks together, cheered him up enough to be able to see off his brother with a smile…
“Do you think I look stupid?” Masaki asked for the nth time as he stood next to his friends fidgeting.
“Yeah, you definitely look stupid asking the same question every minute!” Nino retorted impatiently.
Masaki pouted at the comment and tried to fix his sand-colored yukata, just to do something with his hands.
“Don’t worry, Ma-kun, you look great!” Toma tried to reassure him with a smile. “Right, Jun?” he added after elbowing his boyfriend’s side.
“Yeah, yeah, you look good…” Matsujun mumbled a little breathless and rubbed his aching side.
Seeing this Toma chuckled a little and pecked his cheek.
“Gomen…” he added with a grin. The gentle smile that appeared on Jun’s lips, told them that he was already forgiven.
“I wonder what takes so long for Sho…” Ohno mused aloud as he looked around again, trying to spot his friend in the festival crowd.
“What did you say, why couldn’t he come with you?” Nino asked with a raised eyebrow.
“I don’t know, he didn’t tell me. Just that something came up” the taller boy said with an uncertain shrug.
“As expected from him…” Nino grumbled under his breath sarcastically.
“Don’t say it like that!” Masaki complained.
“Oh, look, there he is!” Ohno exclaimed and pointed somewhere a few meters down the road.
“Really?” Masaki hyped up immediately and looked where the art student was pointing. “Sh… Aniki!” he shouted and raised his hand waving frenetically to get his brother’s attention.
But what happened the next minute surprised all five boys on different levels.
Sho did look up at the voice and spotted Masaki and the others but when they expected him to come over to them, a girl appeared on his side, wearing cute, flower-printed yukata and took Sho’s hand while talking to the boy animatedly. Sho turned his face from Masaki to look at the girl and smiling at her, he nodded and let her kiss his cheek then drag him away wherever she wanted, not even sparing another glance back…
“Was that… Kobayashi from our class?”
“Oh, so that’s why Sakurai-senpai was so busy recently!” Toma exclaimed delighted. “He got a girlfriend!”
Ohno and Nino who were the only ones to know the true relationship of the Sakurai-brothers looked at Masaki with equally worried expression on their faces. Masaki forced out a weak smile and did his best to hold back his tears.
“Are you… okay…?” Nino asked touching his friend’s arm gently. He knew it was an extremely stupid question and he wanted to kick himself for asking cause no way that one would be okay after seeing their boyfriend cheating on his practically in front of their eyes.
“Yeah! Sure! I’m fine…” Masaki choked out with another wavering smile. “I just… remembered that I… promised kaa-chan to… help her out… with this… stuff… So… see you, guys, later!” he blabbed hastily.
“Oh… Okay then…” Nino said nodding, easily seeing through his friend’s lie but didn’t blame him for it.
“Have a safe trip, home, Ma-chan!” Ohno added quickly before Jun or Toma had the chance to try making him stay.
Masaki just nodded and disappeared in the crowd in a second. ‘It’s okay… One not staying with his high school boyfriend forever… It’s just… I wish the others wouldn’t be there…’ he thought as he was fighting his way through the crowd without noticing the tears were streaming down his cheeks unstoppable…
“Masaki, dear! When did you get home? I didn’t hear you!” Ayako asked looking up surprised when the boy entered the living room where the parents were sitting. He got rid off his yukata already and wore plain shorts and T-shirt now. “How was the festival?”
The boy felt a lump growing in his throat at the mere mention of the festival.
“It was good. We had a lot of fun” he lied forcing out a smile. “Actually… I wanted to talk to you… both of you about something…” he said turning his eyes to his step-father who lowered his newspaper at this.
“What is it, Masaki-kun?” the man asked.
“A professor of mine recommended me to this exchange program in Hokkaido. I got full scholarship and everything. All I need is your sign and stamp on my application form if you’re letting me go. I never asked anything before and I really want to take it. It’s a really rare chance…” the boy said handing the paper to his step-father.
“How long is it?” Shuntaro-san asked taking the paper.
“Six months but I want to and pass the exams it can be extended with the same conditions…” the boy answered.
“Are you sure that this is what you really want?” Ayako asked, he mother-instinct told here there was something that her son didn’t tell her.
“I’m sure of it” the boy nodded his head, his lips tightly pressed together.
“Alright then, I have no objections but I expect proper behavior from you while you’re there too” his step-father instructed him firmly.
Masaki nodded again.
“Wakatta! Thank you; I won’t waste this chance…” ‘To forget about Sho forever…’
