Chapter 12: Love is hard but happy?

After that sweet week they could spend alone, Masaki found it harder to pretend and keep away from Sho. He hated that he couldn’t kiss, touch or at least hug the older boy.
And if that wouldn’t be enough, autumn came and only made things worse…
“I’m not sure how much longer I can keep up with it, Nino-chan…” Masaki mumbled dejected in his phone. When he came home from the tutoring school, he found Sho’s door closed and his mother told him that the boy locked himself in to study and wanted to be unbothered - just as he usually did everyday when he came home.
“You should tell it to Sho-kun, not me…” his friend said softly, understanding. “It’s something that relates the two of you…”
“I can’t. He’s busy. He has to prepare for his entrance exams…” the boy said shaking his head furiously despite the shorter student not being able to see that.
Nino sighed on the other end of the line. He knew that tone of Masaki. He won’t change his mind, no matter what he’d say. He was the type who’d rather suffer alone, silently than bothering those who he loved…
“Fine, have it your way… If you want to talk, you know where to find me…” Nino said in the end before they hung up…

“How is Ma-chan?”
Nino stirred a little. During the phone call he almost forgot that his boyfriend was right there next to him. He turned to the older boy who seemingly was still immersed in his painting.
“Lonely…”
Nino walked to him and wrapped his arms around Ohno’s neck from behind.
“Did I tell you already how happy I am that you’re going to Art College?” the younger murmured into his boyfriend’s neck.
“And why is that?” Ohno asked and stopped painting, trying to peek at the younger boy.
“Cause we can still be together while you’re working on this portfolio of yours… I’d hate it if you’d be locked up in your room or the library and we couldn’t meet. Like them… I feel sorry for Ma-chan…” Nino explained on a murmuring voice.
“I know…” Ohno said patting Nino’s hand gently. “I’ll try talking with Sho…”
Nino nodded into his neck then pecked his cheek before let go of him. He pulled out his DS from his pocket and sat on the floor next to Ohno’s stool. Leaning his head to the boyfriend’s thigh he started playing while the other resumed his painting…

“Tadaima…” Sho mumbled tired as he get rid of his coat and toed off his shoes. The endless hours of study in the library after school drained all of his energy. He wished only to eat something and then his bed. Preferably with Masaki in it but with their parents at home that was out of the question - sadly.
“Okaeri, Sho-kun!” Ayako-san smiled at the boy warmly.
Sho looked around with a frown. He just noticed how silent the house was.
“Where’s father? And Masaki?”
“Your father had to leave for a business trip in the afternoon. Masaki’s still in tutoring school… That boy decided to take extra lessons…” she said shaking her head, worry written all over her face.
“Extra lessons?” Sho echoed surprised. ‘Why didn’t he say a thing about that to me?’ he thought and his previous conversation - well, rather fight - with Ohno came back to his mind at this…

“Hey, Sho… How’s Ma-chan?” Ohno whispered on his most casual tone. The two students sat opposite each other in the library - one of them studying, the other just pretending to do so.
“Huh?... Oh, busy, I guess…” Sho mumbled back without looking up his textbook.
“You guess?” Ohno repeated his words, a frown appearing on his face. If Sho would bother to look up, he could clearly see that his friend was far from satisfied with that answer. “How could you not know for sure?” he was a calm person to begin with but this attitude of Sho’s was somehow pissing him off.
“We didn’t really talk recently…” Sho said with his nose still buried in his book.
“Didn’t really talk recently?” the older student felt himself as a parrot but his mind just couldn’t process his friend’s answers at first hearing. Both Sho and Masaki were his friends and he was concerned for both of them, but after knowing for Nino how Masaki was actually, he was just more pissed by Sho’s behavior. “Don’t you two live under the same roof?”
“We can’t really help it, living together or not. We have a lot on our hands now. He knows just as well as I do that it’s a busy period for us. He’s in tutoring school in the afternoons, I’m also coming home late and I guess he’s asleep by that time mostly… Anyway, don’t you have your own studies to do?” Sho replied a bit harshly, wishing to end this conversation when he realized he was reading the same paragraph for the fifth time.
Ohno stood up from the table with big noise which finally forced Sho to look up and meet his friend’s unusually angry glare. He blinked at Ohno confused.
“What?”
“Sakurai Sho! You’re the most horrible, insensitive person I know!” Ohno said and didn’t even bother anymore to keep his voice down. “You should take better care of him! I thought he’s your boyfriend not some toy that you can entertain yourself with when you’re bored! He has feelings too! Think about it!” the older boy said before grabbing his stuff and stomped out not caring about the librarian’s frown or that he left behind a rather shocked and confused Sho…

“Are you hungry? I didn’t know when you will be back so I didn’t prepare anything yet but I can make something now…”
Ayako-san’s voice woke Sho from his memories. He looked at the clock on the wall. It passed 8 PM already.
“It’s late. I go, pick Masaki up” he said instead answering. “We’ll eat something on the way back…” he added over his should as he was already heading out the living room.
“Alright then. Itterasshai, Sho-kun!”

Sho watched as the younger boy walked out the tutoring school’s building. His shoulders were slouching, his face looked strangely pale under the street lights and even the semi-darkness couldn’t hide the dark circles under his eyes. Sho wanted to kick himself. How could he not notice the signs till now? How could he forget about his beloved so easily?
“Masaki!” he called his name and walked closer cautiously as if he was afraid that the younger boy would run away or something.
Masaki jumped at his voice and turned to his brother with wide, surprised eyes.
“Sho-chan? What are you doing here?” he asked confused.
“I came to pick you up. Actually, I’m not happy to know you’re coming home alone at such a late hour… Why didn’t you tell me you’re taking extra lessons? You said your grades were improving fine…” Sho said taking and squeezing Masaki’s hand gently.
“Gomen. I didn’t want to be a bother to you. You have to prepare for those entrance exams…” the boy said lowering his head a bit ashamed then sighed. “My grades did improve but… I didn’t want to be home when you weren’t there… That makes me lonelier…” Masaki said and shrugged trying to act as if it didn’t hurt him the way it actually did.
“You’re never a bother to me! And I’m sorry too. If I would have known… if I’d paid more attention…” the older boy shook his head. “I’m sorry” he repeated. “Let’s go! We can eat something before going home. You must be hungry” he proposed.
“Can we go eat tou-chan’s ramen?” Masaki asked with puppy-eyes.
Sho nodded. After their first date they went there to eat ramen from time to time but he couldn’t get to like that place - or his father, to be honest - no matter how much he tried. It still crept up on him… But he wanted to see his Masaki smiling so he agreed…

But even if Sho wished to leave the place as soon as possible, Masaki’s smile slowly returned when they were there. He couldn’t help but be grateful for whatever it took to see his beloved’s smile.
“Can you wait for me a little? I’ll be back in a minute…” Masaki said with a bright smile when they finished their food and he disappeared upstairs - where Sho assumed to be the place where Masaki’s father lived and where once the boy must have lived too…
The older boy sighed and leaned back to wait for his boyfriend. It was late, he was tired and he wasted a lot of time that he should’ve spent on studying but he decided not to care about that. His Masaki was smiling again, and that was all what mattered. Now that he thought back, he couldn’t remember when the last time was when he saw the younger boy genuinely smiling. As soon as the inter-school tournament was over, he busied himself with the exam-preparations - mostly in the library to avoid his father’s nagging as much as possible. But it also resulted in letting down Masaki…
“What the hell were you thinking, Sakurai?” he mumbled into his palms, rubbing his face. Ohno was right; he is the most horrible, insensitive jerk in whole Japan! ‘Pay more attention to him! It’s your duty to make him happy!’ he ruled himself mentally but before his thoughts could drown farther he was disturbed…
“Os, Aiba!”
Sho peeked to the door at the voice and saw two men in dark suits, one of them had a scar on his face; it was more than obvious that they were people you’d just rather not want to socialize with…
“You know the date, right? Where’s our money?” the man with scar demanded approaching Masaki’s father immediately, not bothering to check if there were any customers or not.
Sho grabbed Masaki’s bag and slid deeper in the booth where they were eating, waiting impatiently for Masaki but keeping his eyes on the semi-argument between the three men as threats and money were exchanged.
“Finally!” Sho groaned when Masaki was back.
Before the younger could say a thing he grabbed his arm to push him out of the shop as soon as possible. When he looked back before stepping out himself, he’s glance met with Masaki’s father’s eyes. And he didn’t like what he saw in those cold orbs…

“What was that, Sho-chan? Something’s wrong?” Masaki dared to ask when they were riding the train already. They stood in the corner next to the doors, Sho shielding the younger from the train’s late night crowed.
“Nothing. I just realized how late it is and you seem to be in the extreme need of a good, long sleep so…” Sho said caressing gently the dark circles under Masaki’s eye with his thumb. He hated to lie to him but he also couldn’t tell him his father got involved with the yakuza…
“Oh…” Masaki blushed a little and looked at his brother touched. For once Sho was really grateful for his gullible nature. “Sho-chan!...” Masaki hissed when the older boy’s hand slid onto his nape and pulled him to his lips and whatever he wanted to say, was drowned by his brother’s lips…
“Stay with me tonight…” Sho breathed onto his lips when they broke the kiss.
“Sho-chan!” Masaki gasped mortified. “We can’t! We won't be alone! Kaa-chan and Shuntaro-san…”
“Father left for a business trip today so we can do as we want. Mom sure won’t mind what we do. But you know… I’m not horny all the time…” he whispered on a low tone a chuckled a little.
“That’s pretty hard to believe after what you did when we were alone…” the younger tried protesting and curled his lips into that adorable pout of his.
Sho chuckled a bit more at this and pulled his beloved into a tight hug.
“I just want to hold you in my arms tonight…” he whispered into his ear.
And who was Masaki to say no at such a plea?...

The remaining weeks till Sho’s entrance exams flew away in a blink of an eye. And before they knew, the results were out as well. But not everybody was happy with them…
“Keio? KEIO?!” Shuntaro-san shouted at his son on the evening he was back from his business trip and get to know the results. “Didn’t I make it clear I expect you to go to TouDai?”
Sho didn’t even blink at the outburst. He knew exactly how his father will react when he gets to know about it. He was just sad that Masaki has to witness it. He knew the younger boy didn’t like it when they were fighting in this house…
“Why are you so angry? I got into my first choice of university. Parents usually happy about that and you said that’s my duty as a Sakurai… Also, Keio is one of the best private universities in Japan. You should be completely satisfied with it” the boy replied, not even trying to hide his mocking tone. And it didn’t help the situation at all…
“Sho! Don’t you dare talk to me on that tone! I told you countless times already!” his father snapped at him. “Go to your room! Now! You can’t leave the house until I say so!”
“I swear you’re the only father who gives punishment to his son for getting into his first choice university” Sho said laughing dryly. He turned to leave but he didn’t actually step out the room when he saw Masaki still standing and fidgeting next to the door. He won’t leave the boy alone with his father.
“Masaki-kun!”
The younger boy stiffened visibly.
“Hai!” he said and tried to look less afraid than he felt.
“I see your grade going up nicely. I’m really satisfied with you. I hope you’ll listen to me and make better choice for your university…”
“Hai!” Masaki said with a bright smile. It was the first time his step-father praised him for anything!
Sho smiled back at the younger boy when he turned to him with a beaming face. He didn’t care that his father was practically insulting him with that comment when his beloved Masaki was this happy…

Later that night Masaki sneaked in Sho’s room without making the slightest noise.
“Huh…? Masaki?”
Sho stirred from his sleep when the younger boy crawled into his bed.
“What’s wrong, baby?” he asked, his voice husky from sleeping.
Masaki slipped under the covers silently but kept his distance. Sho started to think he won’t even answer to him.
“Sho-chan… Now that you got into university…” he started mumbling. “You’ll leave, right? You’ll leave me…” he asked whispered.
“What?” Sho asked confused, his ear must play tricks on him cause he’s not fully awake yet.
“You’ll move out from here, right? As all the university students do… You’ll move out and leave me to start your adult life, right?...”
Sho stared at the younger boy’s form. He tried but failed to see his face, his eyes in the darkness.
“You think I’ll break up with you just because I’ll go to university?” he asked softly and pulled the resisting boy in his arms.
“Won’t you?” Masaki replied with a question and tried to harbor his hurt feelings that threat to break forth in the form of tears.
“I won’t” Sho said firmly. “I won’t move out and I won’t leave you either. I’ll always be here for you. I promise!” he said cupping Masaki’s face with his palm and brushed their lips together softly to seal his words. The younger took a shaky breath to suppress the urge of crying and slowly relaxed into his boyfriend’s strong arms with a relieved sigh. Soon both of them were peacefully sound asleep…

But what Sho didn’t know that he just made a promise that’ll be harder to keep than he thought when he made it…
