Chapter 13: Love or duty?

Masaki sighed and stared out the classroom’s window. Now that Sho wasn’t attending the same school as him, he found it less fun than before. With another sigh he turned away from the bright blue, late spring sky. His glance fell on Nino who played with his DS under his desk. He knew his friend share the same thoughts and feelings now that Ohno was attending to that art college.
“Stop staring at me!” Nino whispered to his friend without looking up.
Masaki held back a giggle. Nino’s sixth sense almost frightened him sometimes.
“And stop pinning over Sho-kun too! It’s boring…” the shorter boy commented on the same low tone.
“I’m sorry for being boring and missing my boyfriend!” Masaki whispered back.
“Sakurai-kun! Come here and solve this equation!” the teacher’s voice snapped at him.
“Hai!” the boy said jumping up from his seat and walked out to the blackboard…
“You know…” Nino started when the final bell rang and they were packing up. “It’s kinda scary that you became the new honor student after Sho-kun graduated…”
Masaki grinned at his best friend shamelessly.
“Well, I have to live up to aniki’s reputation”
“Just don’t get too cocky, honor student!” Nino smacked him on the back of his head. “Come on! I let you treat me a burger before you go to your tutoring school” the shorter boy grinned at his friend.
Masaki nodded laughing and they headed out the classroom, picking up Jun and Toma on the way out of the school building…

Seeing his progress, Shuntaro-san permitted Masaki two free afternoons a week from the tutoring school and he even gave his blessing to his university choices to become a vet.
“Well, it’s still a doctor so it’s acceptable, I guess…” the man mumbled under his breath while he read through Masaki’s application form.
“So… you’re letting me? Really?” the boy asked with wide eyes and a bright smile was already forming on his lips.
“Yeah, do your best, Masaki-kun! As a Sakurai should do…” he said handing the papers back to him.
“Hai!” Masaki nodded with a wide smile decoration his face and ran out his step-father’s office…
The boy ran straight upstairs and went to his brother’s room, wanting to share the good news with him immediately.
“Aniki!... Sho-chan!” he called as he entered the room which turned out to be empty. “Oh… That’s right, he’s not at home…” he mumbled to himself and closing the door behind himself, he walked to his own room.
Right after Sho started university, he joined the school’s newspaper to try himself out as a reporter. Thanks to this, he spent less time at home again…
Masaki sulked a little rolling back and forth on his bed then sighed and reached for his mobile.
“Hey, Toma-chan! How are you?... Yeah, I’m great too! Do you want to go to the arcade?... I’ll call Nino-chan too! Bring Matsujun as well!... Cool, let’s meet there! See you soon!” the boy said cheerfully then hung up.
In Sho’s absence he had to settle the second best option instead of sulking alone at home: spending time with his friends. As he did most of the time in the past few months…

“O-ha-yo-u!”
Masaki stirred and frowned in his sleep when he felt hot breath caressing his ear. He rolled onto his stomach to burry his face into the pillow.
“Baby… Wake up!”
“Ummm-uh…” was all that came from the boy and it was replied with a low chuckle and tickling breath fanning his neck.
“Mou! Sho-cha-an!” the younger boy whined cutely with his eyes still closed, trying to slip deeper under the sheets.
“Oi, oi! Don’t go back to sleep, baby-boy! It’s time to wake up!” Sho singsonged into his ear, hinting several feather-light kisses onto his neck.
Masaki giggled cutely and squirmed away.
“Stop it, Sho-chan! That tickles!” the boy mumbled and finally opened his soft brown eyes, peeking at his brother through his lashes.
“Ohayou, Masaki-baby!” Sho greeted him with a beaming smile. The younger boy’s room was only lit by the small lamp at his desk.
“It’s still dark. Why should I get up? It’s Sunday, isn’t it?” Masaki asked and reaching out his hand tried to get Sho into his bed to be able to cuddle with him and go back to sleep.
“Oh, no! Get up, hurry, baby! We’re going out!” Sho said shaking his head and pulled the boy up sitting in his bed.
“Out? Where?” Masaki asked rubbing his eye adorably.
“Hi-mi-tsu!” Sho grinned some more at him and pecked the tip of his nose. “Now hurry! I’ll wait you downstairs…”

“Aww! Sho-chan, it’s beautiful! Thank you!”
The boys were sitting at a hill’s top in the park near their house. Sho sat behind Masaki, hugging him in his arms, trying to protect him from the chilly, autumn morning air while they watched the sun rising on the horizon. Sho tightened his arms more around his boyfriend.
“I’m happy you like it” the university student whispered and pecked the younger’s neck. “Though I have to tell you, you’re more beautiful…”
“Mou! Stop it! I’m not a girl! We talked about it hundred times at least!” Masaki whined blushing and looked at Sho over his shoulder.
“We also talked about how much you love it anyway!” Sho retorted grinning.
“Shut up!” the younger boy mumbled turning his blushed face back to the rising sun.
“Ne, Masaki…” Sho broke the early morning silence a little while later. “I’m sorry…”
The boy in his arms stiffened at this unconsciously.
“What for?” he asked after swallowing the lump in his throat he felt forming there.
“I was neglecting you again since I started the university. I didn’t mean things to turn out like this. Just… I enjoy it more than I thought I would…” a sheepish grin ran over his face before he turned serious again. “And because of it I forget about time and chances when I should be with you…” he finished on a whispered tone.
Masaki felt the stiffness evaporate from his body, hearing his brother’s words. But in the same time he felt sadness grow in him at the guilt that was heard in the older boy’s voice. He didn’t like it at all when Sho talked on that tone.
“Were you scolded by Ohno-kun again?” he asked joking, trying to lighten up the mood.
A faint smile appeared on Sho’s lips at this. He really appreciated his boyfriend’s attempt.
“Oi! I don’t always need to be kicked in my butt to know I make a mistake, thank you very much! I thought you were my boyfriend, shouldn’t you be more supportive or something?” he mock complained.
Masaki turned to face Sho and put his arms around his neck.
“Well, I love you even if you fail as a boyfriend from time to time…” he said generously, his eyes sparkling with absolute love.
“Well, thank you, my dear! I love you too!” Sho grinned back at him and pulled the younger in for a kiss. ‘I don’t deserve you. I’m sorry, Masaki…’

“Where were you?”
The question snapped at them the minute they stepped into the house.
‘Way to ruin the mood…’ Sho thought rolling his eyes mentally, and looked at his father calmly. On the other hand, Masaki flinched a little at the harsh tone. Just when he thought he’d started to get on the good side of his step-father… Also, the way Sho and his father were staring at each other promised no good at all. The younger boy held back a pout. ‘Why do they have to fight all the time?’
“I… go and check if kaa-chan needs help with the breakfast…” Masaki said after clearing his throat then hurried toward the kitchen…
The two Sakurais kept staring at each other for a few minutes before Shuntaro-san headed to his study room.
“Come with me, Sho!” he ordered looking back over his shoulder.
“What do you want?” the university student asked once in the room and crossed his arms over his chest.
The father sighed at his son’s rebellious attitude. Sho didn’t want to admit it even to himself but now that he looked at his father closely, the man looked more tired and stressed out than normally.
“Look, son, you might think I hate you but I just tried to raise you the best way I could and I did everything for your sake. That you’ll be successful in your life when you grow up” the man started looking at the boy seriously. “It might be too soon but you have to stop this childish, rebellious manner and start acting as a grown-up adult!”
Sho frowned at hearing this. It was surely the first time his father talked to him that way; that he didn’t treat him as a kid… But despite it was actually a good thing, he couldn’t be happy about it. On the contrary, he had a really bad feeling about it…
“Why are you telling me this now?” he asked finally but deep down in his heart he feared the answer.
“The economics recently not too… easy and it’s hard on our company as well. A lot of people will be laid off… For our family’s sake, I can’t let that happen to me as well! For that… I might need to ask a few favors… Most probably from you… And the first is that you start think and act more mature and adult-like, Sho!” the man said looking at his son with serious eyes.
The boy looked back at him. He felt confused. It was as if he saw his father for the first time. And it was the first time his father actually asked something from him; when he didn’t just bark out orders and treated him like a stupid brat… It scared him somehow but he said it’s for their family… ‘If it’s for Masaki…’
“Wakatta. If it’s for the family… I’ll do everything I can…” he said nodding his head…

Sho was impatient and easily annoyed after the talk with his father. He felt as if a dark and unknown threat was hovering on the distant horizon and he had no idea what it was or how to dodge it. All he knew that he will fight with all he had cause he has to protect something important. He has to protect his Masaki…
But he never thought that this is what will hurt him the most…

“Kaa-chan! Where is Sho-kun and Shuntaro-san?” Masaki asked when wondering into the living room he found only his mother there.
“They left an hour or so ago. If I’m not mistaken Shuntaro-san took Sho-kun to a company party…” the woman said after some thinking.
“Heee…” Masaki nodded thoughtfully. “That sounds really adult-like, ne?” he commented grinning while he tried to fight back his disappointed feelings. It was his last spring break before he starts university as well. He hoped to spend a little more time with Sho before that…
“Well, I’m going out to meet the boys… I’ll be back for dinner. Ittekimasu!” the boy chirped with a fake-smile and left…

Sho tried to fix his tie for the nth time since they arrived to this party. He didn’t really have a clear image how his father wanted his cooperation but he surely didn’t think he’ll have to accompany him to a company party! Anyway why did he have to be here wearing a suit?... Why does this party have to be today? When he finally had the chance to spend time with his Masaki… Sighing he gulped down the rest of his orange juice. He just wanted this party to end as soon as possible… He wanted to go home to Masaki…
“Sho! Come with me!”
His father appeared next to him and grabbing his arm, led him away.
“Father!” Sho tried protesting and freeing himself. Accompany his dad to the party was one thing; but socializing with his co-workers or superiors was a completely different thing!
“Just do it!” his father hissed to him before stopped in front of another man. “Kobayashi-buchou! Let me introduce my son to you…” he said with a polite smile.
“Nice to meet you, sir! I’m Sakurai Sho…” the boy bowed his head politely to his father’s boss.
“Ah, so you’re Sho-kun!” the man exclaimed. “I heard a lot of good things about you already…”
“Excuse me?” Sho blinked at him surprised.
“I have my sources…” the man said chuckling then looked around. “Miki! Come here, dear!”
“Hai! What is it, dad?” a girl asked appearing next to them.
“Sho-kun, this is my daughter, Miki. But if I’m not mistaken, the two of you know each other already… Weren’t you classmates or something?”
Sho looked at the girl who smiled at him shyly but prettily, whispering ‘Hisashiburi…’ barely audible.
“Actually… Kobayashi-chan was my step-brother’s classmate. But we did work together in the student council. You always did a great job…” he said turning to the girl smiling…

The glass slipped from Masaki’s hand and crushed into pieces on the floor. Nino, Toma and a dozen of the family restaurant’s customers turned toward him at the noise.
“Are you alright?” Nino asked when he saw his pale and frozen friend rooted to his spot.
“Did you hurt, Aiba-chan?” Toma asked concerned.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost…” Nino commented while Toma guided Masaki to sit down at the nearest chair.
“I didn’t… but… I just had a really bad feeling…” he mumbled, his hand crawling up to his chest, clutching onto his shirt, trying to ease the clenching pain in his heart with it…
