Sho sneaked a peek at the bento box. He tried to ignore it actually but somehow his glance always wandered back at the package and frowned.
He still remembered when this stupid box miraculously returned to the kitchen that morning two weeks ago. Ever since that day it always came back somehow unless that woman bought two dozens of it - which Sho knew that she didn’t, not that he searched it! -, so it must have something to do with that brat… And it annoyed Sho to no end…
His hand crept down and opened the cloth that the box was wrapped in but as he realized what he was doing, he groaned.
“Want it?” he asked pushing the box into Ohno’s chest who sat next to him on the rooftop.
“Yeah!” the other guy’s lit up delighted. “You sure you don’t want it?”
“Would I offer it to you if I’d want to eat it?” Sho asked back staring at his chubby faced friend.
Chuckling, Ohno accepted the bento and opened it.
“It looks really delicious!” he cooed before digging in eagerly. “Umai!” he exclaimed after the first bite. “Anyway, what’s with you recently, Sho?”
“Don’t know what you’re talking about” Sho said sipping on his juice, trying hard not to stare at the box in Ohno’s hand.
“There! You go all defensive again!” Ohno commented.
Sho said nothing at this just turned his head away from his friend.
“Want to talk about it?” Ohno asked raising an eyebrow. “Were you turned down? Who’s the girl? Boy?...” he asked with a teasing grin.
“Why would you think that?” Sho asked complaining.
“What else could distress you, who always gets everything he wants, this much?” the older boy asked matter-of-factly.
“Lunch-break is nearly over. Hurry up, we should go back…” Sho said instead and walked away…
Masaki stared out the window with a dreamy expression on his face. Despite the cold, late November weather, the soccer team held its practice on the outside field. Even from this distance, he knew perfectly well which figure was his brother and followed him with his eyes. He took his mother’s advice on giving Sho time to adapt to their situation but also he did his own observation. He found it odd how different Sho could act. In school he was the perfect model student; always good grades; the president of the student body; the ace of the soccer team… and as handsome as he was, every girl’s dream… Masaki blushed a little at this thought. He noticed that the more he studied Sho, the more he felt being pulled toward him; wanting to know more about him; needing to be closer to him…
“Hey, Ma-chan! What are you doing here? I thought you went home long ago…”
Nino’s voice woke the taller boy from his thoughts.
“Oh,… I was waiting for you, Nino-chan!” Masaki said turning away from the window, the slight blush still evident on his cheeks.
Nino frowned at him suspiciously.
“What were you watching?” he asked stepping next to his friend. “Oh, the soccer team’s practice…”
The taller boy didn’t reply at that, just blushed some more.
“You know, if you’re this interested, you should simply join the team. I’m sure Oh-chan would support your joining…” the shorter boy commented looking up. “Unless… you’re watching them always for a... different reason…” he added smirking.
“Don’t know what you’re talking about…” Masaki mumbled and hurried to his desk to pack his things quickly.
The smirk on Nino’s face softened slightly as he moved to follow his friend’s example on packing up.
“You know… I’m not judging you. My boyfriend’s on that team as well if you’d have forgotten… So if you ever want to talk about it… I’m all ears! Just so you know…” he said with a smile.
“Let’s go eat something!” Masaki proposed, purposely ignoring Nino’s words. He didn’t know what to tell him so he thought it’d be better this way…
“Sure! Let’s go! It’s your treat!” Nino agreed grinning at his friend…
Soon after that Masaki finally decided to join the basketball team. Though he did like playing basketball as well… he did it mostly to escape Nino’s teasing comments that he took a like throwing at him recently in order to find out that mysterious someone he was crushing on…
“I’m not crushing on anyone!” the boy pouted back at his friend.
“Oh, yeah… I’m sure you not…” Nino shot back smirking.
“What are you two talking about?” Jun looked at his friends frowning.
“Masaki’s secret target of affection!” Nino announced grinning.”
“Uso!”
“He is not that!” Masaki tried protesting again.
“Aha! So you’re admitting there is someone!” Nino accused immediately.
“I never said that!” Masaki whined weakly but blushed deeply till the tip of his ears.
“Why haven’t I heard about it so far?” Jun asked complaining.
“Cause there’s nothing to hear about!” Masaki cried out protesting and jumped up kicking his chair back.
His friends looked up at him surprised by this outburst.
“I have to go to basketball practice…” the tall boy said as an excuse and stormed out of their classroom…
Nino looked after him smirking before turned to Jun.
“Now that you mentioned it, you barely spent time with us recently. Care to tell about it?” he started interrogating his other friend.
Now, it was Jun’s turn to blush under Nino’s smirking stare…
When Masaki arrived home later that afternoon, he went straight to the kitchen to fetch a bottle of water but stopped at the door abruptly and smiled brightly. Sho’s bento box was on the table. Again. It was the third day in a row that the box came home on its own - well, by Sho to be precise… Grinning widely, the boy grabbed his water from the fridge then skipped upstairs to Sho’s room. He knocked hastily before opened the door.
“Aniki! Tadaima! How was…?” he started smiling but his face fell in the next minute. Sho’s room was empty. “Ehh… He’s out…” the boy mumbled pouting and went to his own room.
But in his heart he still felt happy. Tomorrow he’ll wake up early to prepare Sho’s bento personally again, Masaki decided and his smile crept back to his face, hoping Sho will like his food…
“Mou, that forgetful aniki!” Masaki sighed pouting when he found out Sho left his bento at home again.
“Just take it after him. Sho-kun was in a hurry in the morning not to be late from his soccer practice…” his mom said with a smile as an explanation.
“Wakatta!” Masaki nodded with a bright smile; happy he got a reason to see Sho at school today too. Suddenly his mood was lifted despite being slightly depressed when he found out that his brother left for school without him…
During lunch-break Masaki skipped out his classroom quickly to search for Sho. First he peeked in their classroom but when he didn’t find his brother there, he headed to the rooftop hoping the older boy will be there as he used to be most of the time. But before he could turn the corner to the staircase, he heard voices.
“Sakurai-kun, matte!”
Jumping a bit at the name, Masaki cautiously peeked over the corner, spotting his brother with a girl standing in front of the vending machines.
“What is it, Kobayashi-san?” Sho asked smiling at the girl politely.
“I heard the new student who just transferred here at the beginning of this semester, is your brother. Is that true?”
“Yeah” Sho said nodding while dropping coins in the machine.
“Mou! I’ve heard nothing of you having a brother!” the girl said on a whining tone that was meant to sound cute.
“He lived with mother till recently when with father they decided to try it again together…” Sho explained smiling.
Masaki was in awe. He never heard so far Sho talking on such a gentle tone. About them on top of all! He felt like his heart would burst out with happiness; he wanted to jump on his brother. Literally…
“Hey, Ma-chan! What’s up?”
The boy jumped startled and turned to Ohno with pinkish face - partly from Sho’s words and partly from being caught on eavesdropping.
“You’re okay? You seem flushed…” the older boy said.
“N-no! I’m fine…” Masaki said quickly. “Ano… Can you pass this to aniki, please? Thanks, Ohno-kun!” he chirped then skipped away quickly in happy daze…
Later that afternoon Masaki was walking home with Nino. The shorter boy eyed him - ever since the lunch break - cause his friend acted like someone who was hypnotized and it made him worry.
“Okay, I had enough of this!” Nino cried out huffing and grabbed Masaki’s wrist to drag him to the near-by family restaurant where they usually stopped by on their way home.
“Now tell me what’s up with you? You’re acting weird, Ma-chan…” he said complaining.
Masaki looked up at his friend with dreamy eyes.
“Hey, Nino! I feel weird…”
“Weird? How weird?” the shorter boy asked back frowning.
“I feel… jumpy… My heart pounds like crazy and my stomach makes these funny flip-flops all the time when… Do you think I’m sick?” he asked suddenly, his eyes rounding wide as he blinked at Nino.
Hearing this, his friend shook his head and chuckled.
“No, you’re not sick…”
“I’m not?” Masaki asked back surprised.
“No, you’re in love, baka…”
