Closed: Lavender - Did that happen? (Maeve & Lily later?)

Jan 05, 2014 18:34

When he first woke up that morning, Roger had buried his face in Lavender's hair and tried to hide from the stripes of sun that were sneaking in through the curtains. Slowly, things had come back to him. Through the feelings of a hangover tugging at the edges of his awareness, Roger remembered celebrating with Lavender - giddy that the ( Read more... )

Lavender woke up a few hours later, well into the early afternoon despite her usual schedule, with a dull throbbing building behind her eyes. She stretched and reached for Roger but found an empty pillow instead ( ... )

Try as he did, things had taken a little - a lot - longer than he'd planned. There were certain things he couldn't rush, though. Apparently getting married spur of the moment wasn't one of those.

He grinned to himself as he kicked the door closed behind him. Glancing around, he didn't actually see a sign of Lavender anywhere. She usually beat him awake when she stayed over, but maybe the wine had hit her a little harder than he'd thought. Settling the take-out lunch containers on the counter, Roger kept one small bag in his hand as he headed toward the bedroom in search of his wife.

Wife. Just thinking the word brought a smile to his face all over again. Moments later, though, it slipped into a look of pure confusion.

When he reached the doorway, Lavender had her back to him, busy stuffing things into her well-used overnight bag.

"Hey. You're up. What are you doing?"

Her heart jumped when he spoke and she smiled despite herself. She reminded herself what kind of situation they had gotten themselves into.

When she turned back to him, Lavender was chewing on her bottom lip and shrugged.

What did he expect?

"I woke up and you weren't here so I just thought-" Lavender trailed off, studying his face. He didn't look like somebody who regretted his spur of the moment, drunken marriage to his childhood sweetheart. Roger's brows usually furrowed in a certain way, his eyes grew sadder. He looked more confused than anything.

So Lavender trailed off and let him fill in the blanks.

As he put the pieces together, Roger's expression did change to a regretful one. Not because he regretted marrying her - never that - but because he should have known better.

"No. Not even close, Lav." Shaking his head, he crossed the room and settled his free hand on her cheek, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I had some errands. I brought lunch. You looked so good sleeping, I just. I wanted to surprise my new wife," Roger grinned as he looked back down at her.

Her cheeks pulled her lips, which were set into a thin, straight line, into a smile. She actually breathed out a breath of air and her shoulders dropped, not realized she had become so tense.

She really, really loved being called his wife.

"Thank Merlin-" she said, trying not to laugh at herself for the conclusions she had jumped to.

"What errands did you have?"

Roger definitely liked Lavender better like this, smiling and loose. He should have left the hasty note on his pillow - or her face - somewhere more obvious. He hated that he'd let her worry and jump to conclusions like this.

"I had to pick up some things. Like this," Roger held up the bag. He stepped back from her and pulled a small, less dusty than the one before, black velvet box from the tiny bag.

"The ring you have... It's what I got then. I wanted you to have the one I'd have gotten you now instead."

Lavender had never even seen the note. She had been too frantic, talking to herself to calm down but jumping to conclusions anyway. A note stuck to her face would have been much safer and more effective.

That didn't even matter now.

He was standing in front of her with yet another box and this time, somehow, Lavender was even more shocked. She pressed her hand to her chest and could feel her heart beat racing.

"Roger, you didn't have to do that. I love this ring," she told him, meeting his gaze. Though, she would have loved any ring that Roger gotten her. She even loved the last-minute piece of yard wrapped around her finger.

"I told you that I don't need a big fancy wedding or ring or- well, anything like that. I have you."

"I didn't say you needed it," Roger shook his head. "I know you don't." Honestly, if she'd been pushing for something huge and flashy - ring wise - they'd be having an entirely different conversation.

"But I'd give you the world if you just asked. Which you won't, because you're amazing." In all the time he'd known her, Lavender had asked for so little, really. Roger couldn't resist going a bit overboard. Especially when it was something like this. Spur of the moment as it was, Lavender deserved a ring that at least began to say just how invested he was in her, in them, in this spur of the moment marriage.

Roger opened the box on a diamond ring that put the last one to shame. "This is what I should have proposed to you with."

She was about to shake her head again, tell him that it was too much to even consider accepting another ring when this one suited her just fine.

But then she saw it.

Lavender's jaw literally fell open as her eyes widened. The ring caught the light and shone brilliantly. It was easily the most beautiful piece of jewelry she had ever seen.

"Oh, Roger," she breathed, looking back up at him in awe. It was over the top and it wasn't anything she would ever pick out for herself. But it was also perfect because it was the ring Roger wanted her to have.

"But I'll only take it if I can keep them both. I want to wear the first one around my neck. It's special."

"You can wear it on the same finger for all I care," Roger promised. He leaned in to kiss her just to taste her smile.

"It's yours. I'd never take it from you."

"You're incredible. I can't believe you ran out for this," she told him, pressing her forehead against his as she leaned up on the balls of her feet. When she was barefoot and in her pajamas (which were actually his sweats) she realized just how much taller he was. There was something sexy about their height difference and the towered over her.

"Wait- but what about you? I need to go out and get you a wedding band!"

Roger loved the way she had to stretch up to reach him for kisses and the like. It made him feel like he could protect her from anything - even though Lavender didn't take much protecting.

"We'll go later. I didn't want to do the actual wedding bands without you."

He thought of everything and it made her feel so safe and taken care of. Lavender found herself looking forward to the idea of jewelry shopping for the first time in her entire life.

She had simple taste, buying mostly costume jewelry when she was younger because she knew how clumsy she was. Even now that she was older, and thankfully much more responsible, jewelry had never made it to the top of her 'much have' list.

Of course, this was different.

"That's perfect," she told him, feeling that excitement build back up.

"But I think we probably have a few things to figure out now? Being happily married and all?"

"Probably more than a few." Roger agreed. He pulled her into quick kiss. "We'll figure it out over lunch?"

It wasn't actually much of a question. There was no way they wouldn't figure everything out. It might take longer than lunch, honestly, but they'd get it all worked out.

They were married. Everything else - most everything else - was just details.

Lavender had been feeling more than comforting with the state of her relationship with Roger ever since her dinner with Lily. Once they had moved past that hurtle, everything just seemed to move forward and better from there. She had all but moved into his flat, spending long weekends together, and had quickly fallen into a routine.

They could overcome anything.

"Oh lunch-" Lavender touched her stomach which was rumbling now, eager for something greasy and terrible for her. "What did you pick up, love?"

"Chinese," Roger told her as he plucked the ring from it's case and tossed the box lightly onto the bed. "It was on the way and I was running late."

He didn't actually know anything about rings and wasn't about to owl his sisters for help - not quite ready for that lecture just yet.

He held to ting up and wiggled it a little. Then he took her hand and slid it into place, pulling her hand high enough to kiss her knuckles.
