"Kanda," Lenalee called, "please, come down here. We want to talk to you. There's things that we . . . that I need to say."

She murmured "Innocence, activate!" after that, low enough so that Kanda couldn't hear. The Boots may not be full-strength, but they probably would have enough lift to get her up on that roof.

If he wasn't coming down to them, then she would go up to him.

Daisya crossed his arms and looked away. "Thanks for the advice," he said, his voice cool and distant. "'m sure throwin' the journals won't help much, but I'll do anythin' to keep from fallin' to that curse."

He finally looked back, and this time his voice was sharp. "Lenalee deserves better'n that."

"So she does," Kanda replied to Daisya with an indifferent shrug. He wasn't here to pick a fight with them, and as far as he was concerned, if Daisya wanted to spout off at the mouth, then let him. It would be better for the three of them if Kanda kept his distance, as far as the swordsman was concerned ( ... )

He's not coming down, Lenalee thought. Fine. We're going to have this conversation, and he's going to come home with us if I have to throw him in that cart and push him.

She gave a leap, and sure enough, the weakened Dark Boots were still able to carry her onto the rooftop, where she landed gently several feet away from Kanda.

I see what you're doin', he thought, frowning. Runnin', as usual. Daisya followed Lenalee to the rooftop, landing lightly next to her. He didn't know what to say, though. He never did. He looked away again, this time in anger at himself.

No matter what he said or did, he wasn't sure it would ever be enough for Kanda... and he wasn't sure what hurt worse.
