Experiment

...

A book that seems to be the common form of communication here. A feathered quill which requires no ink, because it produces a thus-far inexhaustible amount.

Either a dream, an illusion, a virtual reality, or magic. None of the possibilities are particularly promising. Especially not magic.

I hate magic.

Ω batman, ! main plot

No one knows how they work, but they do.
If the books bother you, you're going to be in for a real surprise when you see what else this place has to offer. It doesn't make any sense, and there aren't any answers.

Surprises? Alogic?

I hate those, too.

Well, at least things are looking consistent.

Apparently people can come from different times as well as places.
That's all I know.

Is magic so hard to believe in?

Most of our magics have been suppressed, but it is still very much alive.

Hard to believe in?

No.

Uncontrollable? Unpredictable? Dangerous?

Absolutely.

It depends on the user. Mages are well trained and taught to respect magic. At least, in my world.

Here, in Rivelata, everyone's magic has been blocked, so you need not worry about the abuse of it. At least, not yet. Everyone is doing their best to figure out what is going on, with little success thus far.

Has the cause of the suppression of magic been discovered?

I wish it were one of those other things. I am much more familiar with the virtual than anything else.

So it's magic.

At least I know what I'm dealing with.

Such a bleak outlook in life. Did your mother not hug you enough?

If he is who I think he is and not just some nutcase, then that is so not the can of worms to open here, little lady.

I... I'm not sure what kind of impression I've been giving all of you, but my parents were-- are-- very loving.

I'm Clark Kent, a detective from Metropolis City, if any of you are from the same time frame as I am. No relation to the reporter, I'm afraid.

Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology.

Actually I was referring to the common knowledge that those of us with special abilities have been hindered by something on this island.

If "magic" cannot exist within us then I assume these journals aren't powered by it.

Also, I wasn't addressing you.

That depends. If the function that suppresses magic only suppresses it within individuals and not items-- no one's mentioned any such devices of their own yet, so I'd assume it cuts off personal power-- then the journals could very well be magic.

Sufficiently advanced technology can be broken down and used by anyone with enough mental capacity to comprehend it. Sufficiently advanced magic can be used only by those who have mastered-- or been mastered by-- the magic that comes before.
