Experiment

...

A book that seems to be the common form of communication here. A feathered quill which requires no ink, because it produces a thus-far inexhaustible amount.

Either a dream, an illusion, a virtual reality, or magic. None of the possibilities are particularly promising. Especially not magic.

I hate magic.

It's not magic.

Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology.

Actually I was referring to the common knowledge that those of us with special abilities have been hindered by something on this island.

If "magic" cannot exist within us then I assume these journals aren't powered by it.

Also, I wasn't addressing you.

That depends. If the function that suppresses magic only suppresses it within individuals and not items-- no one's mentioned any such devices of their own yet, so I'd assume it cuts off personal power-- then the journals could very well be magic.

Sufficiently advanced technology can be broken down and used by anyone with enough mental capacity to comprehend it. Sufficiently advanced magic can be used only by those who have mastered-- or been mastered by-- the magic that comes before.

From what I've gathered, the few people who do have items of...magic, though I'm reluctant to keep using that word find them weakened, if not entirely useless. Sorry.

Also I'm of the opinion that anything can be broken down to master, but that's just me.

But not entirely useless, in some cases... How totally are... extra-normal abilities and items suppressed? Perhaps there's a limit to the strength of the power that will be allowed, and the journals are beneath it.

That's an interesting theory. I..

From personal experience, I can tell you that I have a telepath and telekinetic both who have found themselves able to ...perform under duress, though their powers are certainly not what they once were.

Think the ability to move a pencil, as opposed to tearing down a building.

Is there enough information to hypothesize whether the reduction is proportional to the original power or if the degree to which powers function is static?
