Making the house sparkle.

Jan 23, 2023 22:50

After a relatively warm winter with little snow, it is finally starting to feel more like winter. We had some beautiful snow last night. There was no wind, so the heavy, wet snow stuck to all the tree branches, making the drab landscape come alive with its magic.

It looks lovely!

Um. Don't you turn the power off when you fiddle with electrics..? And when was that photo taken? I see the tree is still up.

I didn't know Carmen could be a man's name. Was he Hispanic?

I don't understand the US health system. It must have been one hell of a bill if the value of the house didn't cover it! Are there charitable hospitals, or does all healthcare have to be paid for?

Thank you, Mark! :-)

Well, that was my mistake. At Johnny's house we were in a hurry, and Johnny was not sure which circuit to turn off, so we just shut off the switch at the wall, and tried to be careful. At my house, I thought we could be careful enough to keep the hot wire from touching anything. We did have a cap on it. But it happened anyway. I knew that there might still be current in the hot wire even with the wall switch shut off, but years of working with electricity has made me a bit complacent toward the dangers. So in my house, after we made sparks, I sent Ricky down to the basement to shut the power off ( ... )

Hi Frank!

According to an online translator, Корабли. means: "ships".
I don't understand how this post has any relationship to ships.

*smiles* Yes!

I worry for the future of LJ. With most of its customers unable to make payments in Rubles, its funds must be running low. I hope that it survives, but it would not surprise me at all if it suddenly folds.

Congratulations on your purchase. It indeed adds sparkle to your dining room. I like it a lot.

What I also like is your workshop building. It is charming. I continue to look for something similar to rent here in Minnesota. I'm maxed out on rent where I live and need something more affordable.

Thanks, Neil! :-)

And, thanks for the compliment on the workshop. I built it about 17 years ago. It is the size of a two-car garage, but makes a good place for my tools and woodworking equipment. It has electricity, a wood stove for heat, but no plumbing. I built it in the style of the 1830s, Federal/Greek Transitional, using old window sashes from that period and a door that dates from the 1850s. It suits me well. :-)

I hope you can find a suitable, cheaper place!

Your workshop has more style than most homes. I wish I could afford to have something built like it to live in.

Thanks for the good wishes.

And that's why I don't play with electricity. LOL........ :o

Thanks, Jon! :-)

I am thinking that $60. was a real bargain now. :-)

It is good to have a healthy fear of electricity. I should probably be more wary of it than I am. Over the years I have gotten a fair number of mild shocks when working with it.

Thanks for the offer to share some snow! LOL!!! Could you hold on to it for a while and send me some in July? LOL!!!
:-)

*hugs*

I'll see if I can make some room in the freezer. LOL......

I would love to switch over a lot of our outlets for 3 prongs, and I know it's supposedly fairly easy, but I won't do it myself. LOL.......

Just changing outlets is pretty easy. The problem lies with the wiring in older houses. Houses built in the 1950s and earlier usually have a 2-wire system: one black wire, one white. The black wire is "hot", the white wire is "neutral". Sometime around 1960, the standards changed to a 3-wire system with black, white and green (or bare wire), which is the ground wire. The ground wire connects to that third prong. So if the wires inside the walls are the old 2-wire system, just replacing the outlets won't get you grounded outlets. You need that third ground wire. So, the bottom line is: call an electrician! LOL!
