The Doctor had exited the TARDIS in search of more information. He'd already learnt from one of his future selves that none of the TARDISes worked, but he still needed details. Somehow, some way there had to be a way to reverse this

If the Master counts as one of the Doctor's past and future companions, than the Doctor will be rather happy that he sat down. If not, well tough shit. The Master still sits down next to him.
Without even looking he says, "You're doing it wrong."
"No, I'm not." Not that he looks up. "It's a book. I'm not reading it upside down or backwards. You're just being contrary." He continues reading as if he had never been interrupted.
Jo approached the Doctor cautiously. It wasn't that she didn't want to talk to him, it was that she didn't think she was going to like the answer to the question she wanted to ask.
He looked like he was busy and although that never usually stopped her in the past, this time she just sat down next to him and waited for him to finish what he was doing.
She looked over at the TARDISes, then back at him before she answered. "The TARDIS doesn't work." She waited for him to tell her she'd got it all wrong and had misunderstood what the other Doctor had said.
"I'm afraid not. We're stuck here until we figure this out." He'd been trapped on Earth before. He supposed he'd survive being stuck here for a bit longer.
Fitz had been leaning against some random vertical structure- he was good at finding things to lean on- when the man sat down. Now, Fitz never scorned a man in velvet- nothing wrong with velvet at all. He figured he might as well strike up a conversation. Of course, this is Fitz, so he was at a bit of a loss, conversation-wise.
His best bet was to just offer his pack of cigarettes. "Fag?"
"No, thanks." The Doctor looked up from his book. "Go ahead if you want." He'd grown accustomed to the soldiers smoking on their breaks. Not that he approved, but he'd learnt to keep his mouth shut. "I'm the Doctor. And you are?"
"Another one. The Third to be precise. And while I don't mind if you smoke, please try to keep it out of my face. And perhaps you could make yourself useful here." He spoke crisply, but not unkindly.
Liz emerged from the TARDIS a short time later, carrying various books and papers for her own research purposes. Although she intended to help the Doctor in whatever way she could - she might even hand him test tubes and tell him how brilliant he was, just this once - she hoped to get the chance to do something of her own. She was a scientist, after all. It must have been why she was brought here.
Sitting down on the bench - taking great care not to disturb any of the Doctor's materials - Liz opened one of the books and began scanning the index.
"Do you actually know what you're looking for?" she asked, a moment later, "Or is this just general 'research'?"
"At the moment, just general research. Tonight, I'm going to take these charts and see which of the stars are still there. So we're looking for astronomy and physical sciences, trying to find the principles that govern the current dilemma." He grinned at her and turned back to his book, trusting her to do her own work and report to him with any questions.
"It looks like it. There seem to be several people here who weren't here before." He had no idea who was behind it, or whether the Time Lords had ever had a hand in it, but finding out what was going wrong was more important right now.
Oh, she hoped it was him. So far, it seemed everyone she thought she knew hadn't been who she thought. But hope seized Sarah Jane again when she noticed a familiar head of white hair.
"And who else would I be, Sarah Jane?" He couldn't tell if she was the original Sarah he had travelled with or the more recent version, but that didn't really matter. With a glint in his eye, he gathered her up in a great big hug.

"Will the communicators still be active?" she asked, a moment later, "Will they still be bringing in people to help with the situation?"
Although the nature of the situation, and the nature of whoever 'they' were was something Liz wasn't entirely sure on at the moment.
