That's some fine police work there, Lou.

I had taken an inadvertent nap earlier this evening, and woke up around half past midnight. I'd intended to run out and grab a burger or something earlier, but the latest anyone stays open around here is midnight. The most notable exception to that rule is the new Uber Walmart that opened in Lafayette, just south of Arapahoe on 287. I was craving a ( Read more... )

Perhaps he assumed that Lafayette wasn't a town that contained individuals desperate enough to snatch things from a police vehicle?

That's certainly possible. Lafayette is a quiet, small-ish town, but it's not Mayberry by any means. I mean, there were three police vehicles trolling in the same block or so at one in the morning - it suggests a need for a police presence at that time of night.

And really, any town with a Super Walmart is a town with enough variation in economic strata that there'd be crime - particularly the kind of crime where someone steals something out of a car. Eh, who knows, but I'm not exactly willing to give this cop the benefit of the doubt. Any regular citizen would be dumb to leave his car wide open for someone to root around in, but that kind of dumb really only hurts the citizen. This kind of dumb hurts the community when it's a cop. Someone could have gotten his hands on a gun or a badge or something like that.

More like a snack. You could have fit a small-ish sandwich or a large-ish candy bar in the bag he brought out.

But hey, now you can say what's inside a cop car for your novel. :P
On a different note, our department just got AR15s. They're shiny. I got to play with one. (well, hold one and pretend I was shooting things :P)

Ah, very nice! I haven't used an AR-15 in years, but I remember how light and crisp it felt. Couldn't hit shit with it, but I'm not what you might call a natural marksman.

The writing angle is a good one though. I think I have to go back to Walmart tonight to get more stuff. Maybe I'll get lucky and the same cop will be shopping again, and I can take a closer look.

... Well, until the guy tases me for being too nosy.

The AR-15 we have seems pretty idiot proof. It has a red light that you just have to get aligned with your target.

See, it's people like you that snoop around that create the demand for late-night/early morning police presence.
