I think it's a cornflower, Centaurea, probably one of the annuals. Also called bachelor's buttons.

Yup, that's cornflower. That little scaly spherical base is very distinctive. (Thistles have that too, as well as blue flowers, but they also have pretty obvious spines. *g*)

Alas! The bachelor buttons are in a different area and have a completely different structure. I guess this picture doesn't show it very well. Or else people just aren't clicking through to the really large version, where I feel the differences are clear.
