I think it's a cornflower, Centaurea, probably one of the annuals. Also called bachelor's buttons.

seems like a possibility, although the leaves in the various pics i looked at didn't seem quite right.

Yup, that's cornflower. That little scaly spherical base is very distinctive. (Thistles have that too, as well as blue flowers, but they also have pretty obvious spines. *g*)

That doesn't look right.
I have cornflowers (bachelor button) elsewhere and this is a completely different plant. I think you have to click through to the really large version of this photo to see it but this one has a cluster of bell-shaped flowers on top of the stalk rather than a single flower on the top of each stalk.
