There are a lot of different ways to watch a show. There are a lot of different ways to like a character or ship a pairing. There are lots of ways that I don't personally get, or which I just wouldn't enjoy. And it's easy to be dismissive of the ways that don't ping for you, and I've certainly been guilty of that at times. Mea culpa ( Read more... )

See, Barb, this is why I do my best to stick to non-canon pairings. They have no fanbase...er...maybe I should rethink that plan?

Sometimes I think everyone would be a lot happier if Spike/Buffy had stayed non-canon...

But then I'd never have realized it was there! ;-)

That would be the beauty of it! If it isn't there, no one can tell you what it has to look like. *g*

I don't think it's something restricted just to fandom. You see it in politics (s/he can't be a REAL Democrat because s/he doesn't support abortion rights) and religion (s/he can't be a REAL Christian because s/he thinks women should be allowed to be preachers).

I don't know why people can't acknowledge differences under the same umbrella label, but if one person's canon veers away from that of another's, then that person seems to be defensive and tries to dismiss that person's argument by saying they don't really live up to the label they profess.

Which is why I let people label themselves, rather than doing it for them:-)

The problem is, there's only about eight weeks a year where wearing them won't cause heat stroke. *g*

Heh. I often think we're at opposite ends of the Spuffy spectrum. Cause I unabashedly love what we got in canon (with a couple well-discussed exceptions). And sometimes, I feel like I'm betraying the Spuffy ship by not hating the badness that was S6 or being disappointed by S7 or whatnot. Which is oddly contrasted with the other times I feel like a delusional, brain-dead fangirl shipper for fervently believing in a post-series Spuffy ( ... )

A fair number of the parts I love like burning are in seasons six and seven, actually - they're just mixed in with the parts which I praise with faint damns. *g*

Heh, I hear you, but I've accepted that I'm sort of an odd duck when it comes to Spuffy. :) I've often considered using the label, "This story contains Buffy and Spike in a relationship, but it's not really Spuffy," but you're right, it's kind of unwieldy.
