Way easier. Though yesterday I was bored to fucking t e a r s. She left busywork for every class--packets that needed to be completed--and I was basically there to make sure they wouldn't leave ( Read more... )

I've never subbed for gym, but for math, english, office studies, science...yes. I was asked to sub for the elementary kids, but I said nothing under fourth grade. No one wants an incident, I said ominously ( ... )

For real. I think I'm going to avoid 1st graders for a bit. Maybe by the time they're in 2nd or 3rd they'll have realized they need to actually pay attention and learn shit and sit STILL. But I doubt it.

That's pretty much what I'm doing too. I'll wander over if I see them giggling over something on their phone, but for the most part if they want to talk while they get their work done I don't care as long as it stays within a reasonable noise level. But oh man, that SUCKS. For everyone involved! D:

Holy shit, you did this for $60 a day?? I get around twice that (partly because I have a degree, which gives me an automatic salary bump). I...don't think I could do this job for $60 a day. *grovels at your feet*

I wondered that too. I have a BS and of course you have to go through all the screening. Fortunately I'd already been fingerprinted and background checked because I already work in health care.

LOL give me a week or so to get my feet under me--right now I'm coming home completely braindead about everything--and honestly, there hasn't been a whole lot to bitch about (YET) that I haven't whined to everyone in these lj posts. *sails on flying flag of failboat colors*

I tried being iron fist girl with those 1st graders and it worked NOT AT ALL. Or maybe I could have been more iron fisty but I'm scared of small people crying? Sort of. Idk, I WOULD RATHER NOT and i think i'mma take a break from 1st graders for a while. But hooooooooooooooooooooooly shit, SIXTY?? My biggest class so far has been 25! *grovels at your feet too jfc*

Hopefully there will be a sub folder. I'm kind of wary about it since he's just bailing for one class, that seems like the type of thing a guy might space on :| But I am totally bringing my ipod, thank you so much for that and all your other great suggestions! *TACKLES*

Oh hey note? On the coffee machine issue extended - if a kid leaves the classroom without permission? 1) Stop them at the door. That shouldnt happen, ever. 2)Contact an admin because a kid wandering the halls without a pass is technically truant and they need to be on the look out for that kid in the halls. 3)when they return, send them to the teacher who is playing jailkeeper for you. Trust me. They shouldn't be doing that. Not ever ( ... )

This is all such great great advice, thank you for this! Some of it I know from just watching what other subs have done when I was in school, and today I managed a few teachable moments using the first awful class as incentive for the others to behave. ("I don't want to leave Madame any more negative notes, so keep that in mind." *STARE*)

Most of these classes are pretty good because she keeps them on a tight leash when she's there. It'll be less fun when I have to sub for someone who's more lax in discipline. :/

THE WHISTLE MAKES ME THEIR GOD. (but do i have to use some old guy's whistle ick ick the euphemism just made this even woooooorse)

YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY NOT WATCH THIS SHOW BECAUSE IF YOU LOVE IT YOU WILL BE ANGRY AT ME FOR RUINING YOUR LIFE (also just a heads up it takes a couple episodes before you start noticing the nuances of things, but if you're any kind of sucker for power dynamics and actually well-written female characters then this is the show for you!)

You really really need to do a fic-rec post for PoI. Because I love that show like dying, and have just started reading fic, and I NEED ALL THE GOOD FICS IN MY LIFE, YEEEEEES PRECIOUS I DO.

Congratulations on the sub-teacher thing. I strongly suspect you will rock at it and will be the sub that the students are actually happy to see. I had some subs like that, and just adored them. One was Mr. Z, who was like six feet forever, had a grey handlebar moustache, and used to quote Monty Python at me. I adored him. Another was Mr. R, who was young and gorgeous and fresh out of school and used to get us to re-enact Shakesphearian tragedies in English class and gave bonus points for whoever died the most gruesome death. Cool teachers FTW!!!

Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I'm a lot more ranty here than I am in person, though I think I did manage to put that girl in her place (at least long enough for the rest of the class to get done what they needed to get done). Idk, I'm learning.

All the time, bb. All. The. Time. ;D
