Way easier. Though yesterday I was bored to fucking t e a r s. She left busywork for every class--packets that needed to be completed--and I was basically there to make sure they wouldn't leave ( Read more... )

You and I need to like...have a IM Substitute Teacher Stitch n Bitch once a week. Just sit around on Gchat or Skype or something and talk about the perils of life as a substitute teacher. NO ONE UNDERSTANDS OUR DRAMA KLU. *flings self on you*

I ONLY do middle and high school. The one time I tried elementary school....it ended badly. Like I was fired and the school board called to check if I was doing my job right. Yeah.

I'm an iron-fist sort of girl. Which is fun because about 15 minutes into class most of the kids realize, no Ms K really isnt fucking around when she says keep the talking down, dont leave the room without a pass, do your work because I can, have and will kick your ass over to the teacher across the hall who will write the referral I'm not allowed too. Thus far my greatest discipline victory is getting a class of more than 60 6th graders to sit in complete silence for an entire period. Fuck not with me, kittens. You wont like it.

As for the boredome, ugh bb I learned that the hardway. 1)Always bring your laptop AND charger 2)Always bring your phone because 2a) If you have G3? Download FoxFi and pay the 6 dollars to unlock it. It's the best money you will ever spend. Then you can have your own locked wifi! 3)always bring at one actualfax made of paper book. 4)Always bring your ipod and headphones. Sounds ridic but you'd be amazed how many classes are actually boring/quiet enough to warrant them.

Gym subs do what evers in the sub folder. If gym is making them run laps, the ipod may be the way to go. Just a suggestion from one working sub to another.

Serious about the Sub Stitch and Bitch thing.

LOL give me a week or so to get my feet under me--right now I'm coming home completely braindead about everything--and honestly, there hasn't been a whole lot to bitch about (YET) that I haven't whined to everyone in these lj posts. *sails on flying flag of failboat colors*

I tried being iron fist girl with those 1st graders and it worked NOT AT ALL. Or maybe I could have been more iron fisty but I'm scared of small people crying? Sort of. Idk, I WOULD RATHER NOT and i think i'mma take a break from 1st graders for a while. But hooooooooooooooooooooooly shit, SIXTY?? My biggest class so far has been 25! *grovels at your feet too jfc*

Hopefully there will be a sub folder. I'm kind of wary about it since he's just bailing for one class, that seems like the type of thing a guy might space on :| But I am totally bringing my ipod, thank you so much for that and all your other great suggestions! *TACKLES*

Oh hey note? On the coffee machine issue extended - if a kid leaves the classroom without permission? 1) Stop them at the door. That shouldnt happen, ever. 2)Contact an admin because a kid wandering the halls without a pass is technically truant and they need to be on the look out for that kid in the halls. 3)when they return, send them to the teacher who is playing jailkeeper for you. Trust me. They shouldn't be doing that. Not ever.

Whenever they say anything that isn't in the subnotes, assume they're lying. I've had to go through roll 3 times because people wouldn't tell me their names. Wish I was kidding but I'm not. So once you get past 5th grade, my best advice is to be nice but know that chances is are that they're fucking with you. You're a chew toy and they like to push limits and so push they will.

The BEST answer to "Our teacher lets us" is "Well Mr/Ms _____ isnt here today. I am. So day we're going to do X." you'd be amazed how far that goes. I know I sound preachy but I had to learn all that shit the hard way.

Also very important? Pick a system, stick to it, DONT FLAKE OUT. For example - 3 strikes and your out? That out has to REALLY involve the student being removed from the class, impossing silence, etc on the middle/high school level. This is what the expression give them an inch and they take a mile was invented for.

Not trying to preach but I just had this hit me after I already hit send on the coffee machine thing. Most of these are in-the-room techniques rather than how-to-get-them-later. They're extra great if they're a school you go to more than once? Because then you get a reputation for being a hard ass so they just obey and omg that is a beautiful thing.

This is all such great great advice, thank you for this! Some of it I know from just watching what other subs have done when I was in school, and today I managed a few teachable moments using the first awful class as incentive for the others to behave. ("I don't want to leave Madame any more negative notes, so keep that in mind." *STARE*)

Most of these classes are pretty good because she keeps them on a tight leash when she's there. It'll be less fun when I have to sub for someone who's more lax in discipline. :/
