So high school subbing.

Way easier. Though yesterday I was bored to fucking t e a r s. She left busywork for every class--packets that needed to be completed--and I was basically there to make sure they wouldn't leave ( Read more... )

I've never subbed for gym, but for math, english, office studies, science...yes. I was asked to sub for the elementary kids, but I said nothing under fourth grade. No one wants an incident, I said ominously.

I mostly enjoyed it, but I never tried to do more than babysit. In fact, I hated the teachers that didn't leave anything for the classes to do, because I didn't want to have to think up ways to entertain them. I tried to keep them on task, but always wound up saying, "Whatever, this was Mrs. Graham's assignment and she'll be back tomorrow. You can explain to her why it's not done." Also, "Hey, all I ask is that you be quiet enough that you don't bother the other classes. I get paid whether you learn anything or not." The worst stint was for this poor teacher who needed a sub for an urgent doctor's appointment for abdominal pain and wound up having to have his appendix out. I subbed for him for two weeks--advanced math, where I was in WAY, WAY over my head--and the following week were final exams. The poor kids. I encouraged them work together and help each other all they wanted.

So, yes, I was awesome at substitute teaching. Or, you know, the best you can expect for $60 a day.

For real. I think I'm going to avoid 1st graders for a bit. Maybe by the time they're in 2nd or 3rd they'll have realized they need to actually pay attention and learn shit and sit STILL. But I doubt it.

That's pretty much what I'm doing too. I'll wander over if I see them giggling over something on their phone, but for the most part if they want to talk while they get their work done I don't care as long as it stays within a reasonable noise level. But oh man, that SUCKS. For everyone involved! D:

Holy shit, you did this for $60 a day?? I get around twice that (partly because I have a degree, which gives me an automatic salary bump). I...don't think I could do this job for $60 a day. *grovels at your feet*

I wondered that too. I have a BS and of course you have to go through all the screening. Fortunately I'd already been fingerprinted and background checked because I already work in health care.

On further thought, it probably is an Alaska thing--overcharging us on everything means they have to pay us more! (slightly)

I have a bachelor's degree too, but the only time you get a salary bump is if you're actually a certified teacher (and even then I think it's only $65 per day), and I'm a clinical laboratory scientist. I wasn't working at the lab much at the time, mostly weekends, and I just did it to get out of the house. And it's a small school, where my kids go, (and where I went and where my mom went) so I know all the kids and only a couple of them are absolute monsters. Besides, i suspect that $60 is worth a lot more in New Mexico than it is in Alaska.

Having said all that, I wouldn't have hated to do it if I needed money that badly, because it was a ridiculously low amount of money. But it wasn't hard work and I enjoyed being around the kids. I had to quit when the lab job got busy, because I make at least 4 times that at the lab.

i suspect that $60 is worth a lot more in New Mexico than it is in Alaska. Yeaaaaaaaaaaah as soon as I posted that comment I started wondering about this. It's true, we're kind of a pricey place to live. :/

That's really great, though, that you were able to work it around something that you also enjoy (that pays a little better).
