When I saw that on redbrunja 's journal this morning...I saw red. I'm still seething.
Just...the entire situation is fucked. Even though it doesn't target natural miscarriages, it inevitably will hurt women who are already in unspeakable pain. This law makes any woman who has a miscarriage subject to criminal prosecution. It's a goddamn witch hunt waiting to happen.
How did something like this even pass? And if that's the case, what's next? Are they going to criminalize contracting HIV? The common cold? Oh, wait. Those can happen to males or females, so that won't happen.
You think that we've come so far, and everything is equal and happy and then...you read something like this.
Yeah, I was surprised that it passed, but I wasn't particularly surprised that it passed in Utah. Why am I not shaking the feeling that the reason this passed is the Mormon belief that women are sperm receptacles?
I think the idea behind the bill is that it targets women who INTENTIONALLY terminate their pregnancies. But, seriously, how the fuck would anybody know the difference? Like the case of the woman in Iowa (linked in the article) who fell down the stairs. When she was in the ER getting treated for her injuries she mentioned that she was nervous about having her third child. The ER nurse CALLED THE COPS ON HER. I can see the law in Utah being used to persecute women who miscarry naturally, which is such a tragedy under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES that to add legal trouble and the accusation that she wanted the baby to die. I can't even imagine how traumatic that would be

Fun fact: As a group, Catholics are one of the strongest opponents of abortion. Their teenaged girls are also the group with the highest rate of abortions.
Fun fact: the more repressed a culture is, the more anxious and rebellious the youth will feel, leading to problems like this. And yet, using and teaching the use of birth control is a sin. *sarcastically* It's not like this could lead to greater social and emotional problems in the oppressed masses. Cause and effect, people.
Let's remember that these people are from the same part of our society that wants to keep a healthcare system that refuses to pay for preventative medicine. This is the same thing. They focus on the effect of the problem, not the cause, so the problems continues.
Paltrow says this bill puts a lie to the idea that the pro-life movement cares about women.
"For all these years the anti-choice movement has said ‘we want to outlaw abortion, not put women in jail, but what this law says is ‘no, we really want to put women in jail.'"
OHMYGOD. This is insane. Especially since there are many women I know who had miscarriages (like my mom even) and stillborn children. This is utterly insane. I just... I just... Don't have words for how much this is crazy.
