Fucking hell.
This is disgusting and demeaning. No mater how someone feels about abortion (and I know there are a variety of views on this on my flist), making pregnant women criminals when something goes wrong with their pregnancy is FUCKING WRONG. It's a flashback to the days when women could be accused of witchcraft if they miscarried. Same. Fucking. Thing. It creates the same atmosphere of fear and oppression. Even if the law doesn't specifically target women who miscarry naturally, the potential for hurt and life-ruining is astounding, such as the case of the woman who fell down the stairs in Iowa.
And I can't imagine a girl being so desperate that she pays someone to beat her to abort the pregnancy. Maybe instead of creating a law to counteract it, why don't these people look at the greater social issues that lead to the situation in the first place.
