Unlike most bands, it's Radiohead's newer material (Kid A onwards) that I really like. Enjoy though, there's a lot of good music in there.
Radiohead aside: Last.fm always recommends Radiohead more than any other artist, probably because they sit at the confluence of electronic and rock and are ultra-popular.
Looking forward to this. I have happy memories of seeing Radiohead support REM when The Bends came out and I think, or at least thought, that album is excellent (scrappy exciting rock with some solid emotional and musical backup) and not depressing at all. But then I had no desire to listen to much past that for exactly the reasons you say. Good luck.
I've been a massive fan of Radiohead (I listened to The Bends a _lot_), but not so much of their more recent stuff. I'm looking forward to hearing what you think.
Yeah, OK Computer was the changnig point - where they went from Rock (with some electronica) to Electronica (with some rock). Which is why that album is popular with both groups, but the ones either side of that line tend to put off one of the groups.
That certainly fits with aftnn.org - a big electronica fan - only liking their later stuff. But as a fan of both rock and electronica, I might even enjoy all of it :-)
I can enjoy radiohead when I'm in the right mood, but haven't listened in a good while. My usual go-to for depressed music is the Eels - and it's probably a good thing that I haven't felt like listening to them in a fair bit.
Of course, all this has happened before, and all this will happen again...
The Eels can be very depressing, it's true. But not all of their stuff is - their album Souljacker is positively upbeat, though sometimes in a "hell yeah I'm gonna go out and murder all the people who didn't appreciate me and bury their bodies in the woods" kind of way.

I guess I should have been more specific - the "electroshock blues" album is what I was thinking about....
