Honestly I would recommend the North Side. I've always found that a neat area, and the rent there is cheap. Really the only disadvantage is the neighborhoods get pretty packed with parking if big events are happening. I'm pretty sure you can find a bus that will go up to McKnight.

"eclectic"

(don't know if it's a transfer option for you, but if you're looking for a place to relocate that is a cheapish smaller city with good public transportation, also consider Portland OR.)

Being from Pittsburgh and living in Portland, I'd say that Portland is NOT cheap, especially compared to Pittsburgh.

Compared to San Francisco and New York, yes.

My bungalow in a kinda-bad section of Portland is worth as much as my dad's 4BR/3 bath house in Bethel Park.

Mexican War Streets of the Northside...super easy to get to Ross Park, very close to major Pittsburgh attractions and close to artsy stuff in the city.

Seconded! The war streets are gorgeous. Not a whole lot going on there (yet), but it's a nice place, within walking distance to downtown and on buslines going to the east end and south side.

This was one of the North Side areas I was thinking of for my suggestion. I really like the feel of the area, and I consider that 'arty.'

The Southside is also arty, eclectic, and a transportation hub - it's why I live here. It's gotten to be more upscale in recent years, but you can still find good deals near 10th street. Also, this is closer to the T (subway) , which can take you downtown in 2 minutes. (there are buses to anywhere from there ( ... )

If you want arty or interesting with lots of young people, the neighborhoods mentioned are a good bet. Lawrenceville is really becoming trendy and there are a lot of cool restaurants and galleries and other neat places opening up. Somewhere around Lawrenceville/Bloomfield/Friendship or East Liberty/Shadyside would put you within walking distance of a lot of places to get groceries and other stuff and there is also good bus service. Out of those neighborhoods, it seems like apartment prices are rising in Lawrenceville and Shadyside will probably be more expensive. Squirrel Hill is another option - lots of shops and restaurants and you'll be able to walk and take the buses. A lot of the graduate students I know at Pitt and CMU live in Oakland, Shadyside and Squirrel Hill and it's very easy to get to downtown on the bus from all of those neighborhoods ( ... )
