Yes I loved it. I really didn't like Jo and the Doctor's heart to heart on the planet. She's jealous of Amy and Rory?!? Cause they could travel after they got married? Well Jo you never asked. (I realize that's a Rusty clever inside joke ... but come on it's not a good one.) It really wasn't much different than School reunion either. I did get teary though because it was sweet
( ... )
"throwing the toys out of the pram" that exactly how I "read" Jo's jealousy of Rory and Amy. And also that he locked down Ace and Barbara and Ian's fate (despite how wonderful the shout outs were). Sort of like "HA! BIg Finish you can not do more with Ace than I did with Sarah Jane." I might be over thinking that one. But that's what I thought anyway.
I'm sort of balanced on a fan-seesaw here (or possibly a tightrope) - on the one hand, my pathetic fanboy squee over the very notion of having Jo and Sarah and Eleven all on the same screen, and ON TOP OF THAT all of the gratuitous companion-w*nk, and on the other hand my unremitting contempt for Rusty's efforts to write "emotional" drama. Seriously, the guy either has some serious "issues" or a complete inability to depict personal relationships. And it's nothing to do with it being a kids' show either, because the relationships between Clyde, Rani, Sarah etc depicted every week put Rusty's attempts to sketch Doctor-companion relations to shame.
That said, all of the shout-outs made me squee a lot. I'm pathetic, I know. ;D
But yeah, if they'd just got RTD to write a detailed synopsis and then got someone, anyone, else to write the actual script...
And the only way Ace would be running a charity would be if it was secretly funding terrorists freedom fighters battling against various corrupt and/or repressive regimes around the world... :D
Also the scene where the Doctor knows everything that Jo's been up to and says he can't find her. So sweet. So cool. So well played by Manning and Smith.
Then in the next beat when he says it's impossible to go back and look in on his companions? Why'd RTD have to put those words in the Doctor's mouth and ruin it? If Sarah Jane can look the companions up on the Internet (not even using her alien supercomputer), certainly the Doctor can too. At least leave it open to interpretation. But no. It was just a wanky excuse for RTD to revisit that last drawn scene from the lackluster End of Time (as if he hadn't already done a flashback to it in part 1 AND talked about it in part2) to say (AGAIN) "wasn't that a bloody clever scene. And look. I've rewritten it to put in more off camera goodness".
HACK.
Ok I'm liking RTDs contribution less and less the more I think about it. Better stop now.

RTD said that through the Dr's mouth? Er sorry but has he forgotten EOT and how TEN visited ROSE before he met her? FFS! I haven't missed much then! I'd love to think Ace is a renengade time vigilantie and is up to something-come on she hung around with 7 for a long time!
Also why is it that the blondes are the jealous ones???
Well yes, the way I understood it, the Doctor says in the normal situation he can't look in on former friends/companions ... but in that one special EOT scene he not only looked in on the companions we saw, but every companion he ever had (including Jo). So supposedly that scene was the one time the Doctor ever did something like that. Now isn't that special?
I like to think that Ace is doing something like what you suggest. I think Big Finish is definitely going that direction. She's almost more Doctor-y than the Doctor in the most recent audio release.
The SJA show was good, even if I am down on these parts of it.
