During the last three weeks, Cas and Sam had become bestest girlfriends. Sam taught Cas how to use makeup and went shopping for more clothes for Cas. Apparently what Dean would pick out was “inappropriate.” Whatever, Dean was happy to wait in the car while the girls cooed over pretty things.

Meanwhile, Dean was showing Cas how to shoot effectively and fight dirty. “Dean, it doesn’t seem fair to…”

“Cas, monsters and demons don’t fight fair. If you want to beat them, you need to do anything you can.”

Other than clothing, Sam and Cas also bonded over their mutual nerdy need to research. Sam even bought Cas her own laptop. With the power of those two researching, Dean never really had to do much. He was okay with that. The three of them were becoming a good team.

During one of their days off, Cas was sitting on her bed. Her laptop was resting on her crossed legs and she had headphones on. Her head tilted like she was trying to hear something better. Dean watched in amusement. He turned back to the television and kept flipping through the channels. He glanced back at Cas who was starting interestedly at the computer.

Castiel turned and saw Dean watching her. She slipped an ear of her headphones off. “Dean, what is a G-6?”

“What?” Dean smiled. Not that he knew, but he wondered were that question came from. Dean turned off the TV and moved to Cas’ bed. She pointed to the screen. Cas was on Pandora Radio. “Did Sam show you this?”
Castiel nodded. “He said I should listen to music to experience more current culture.”

“That’s sounds like something he would say.” Dean watched as the song changed to Before It’s Too Late by the Goo Goo Dolls. Cas’ head immediately turned back to the screen. Dean pulled the headphones out of the computer to hear the music. “And this sounds like what Sam would listen to. What did he type in for this?”

Cas pulled off the headphones. “Um, Katy Perry.” Cas pointed to the station name.

Dean laughed. “Huh, well Sam is definitely trying to make you even more of a girl.” Dean sat back but when Taylor Swift came on he had to draw the line. “Okay, that’s enough of that. You wonna hear really good music?” Dean took the laptop from her lap. “How do you change the music?”

Cas leaned over and pointed to the left side. “There where it says ‘create a new station’.”

Dean clicked and typed in Led Zeppelin. “There you go.” The song Kashmir played. He handed the computer back to Cas. She listened in silence. “That’s better right?”

Cas continued looking at the computer. “I don’t really have a preference Dean. I’m just trying to learn more.” But Dean saw Cas hit the like button under the song. He smiled and closed his eyes. He wouldn’t mind listening to some music while Sam was out getting food. They listened through the Zeppelin song, a Pink Floyd, and The Doors when Sam walked back in, two bags of food in hand.

“Hey Sammy.” Dean opened his eyes and sat up. Sam threw his bag to him. Dean caught it and quickly emptied the contents. Sam set the other bag on the table by the door.

“I see Dean got into your music station Cas.” Van Halen was playing. Sam took off his jacket.

“I improved her music station.” Dean said with a mouth full of bacon cheeseburger.

“Whatever.” Sam emptied the bag onto the table. He handed a burger to Cas and sat at the table to eat his chicken salad.

The three ate in silence while The Rolling Stones played on the computer. Dean was having a strange sense of Déjà vu. He and his brother had eaten a lot of meals together in motel rooms throughout their lives. Now Cas was there and it almost felt like a family unit again.

Dean was snapped out of his thoughts when Aerosmith’s Walk This Way started. He set his food aside and practically jumped at the computer. Cas jumped when Dean reached past her and turned the volume up. Dean started singing along with the song and stood up.

Sam shook his head at his brother. “Dean, you’re such a dork.”

“Shut up Sam.” Dean threw a fry at Sam.

Castiel watched the boys with a fond expression. She hadn’t seen them like this in years. She was happy to know that the two brothers were really close again. Castiel had lost her family, maybe now she could start trying to find a family with Sam and Dean.

When the food was gone and the music was stopped, Sam brought up something he had been looking into. “So, it seems like there could be something strange happening a few towns over.” Dean and Cas listened as Sam explained. “It’s been happening for about a week and a half now. Girls have been killed and cut up. The police say that the girls were found tied up and tortured before they died. In all the cases someone has witnessed the girls’ boyfriend or husband enter the house before the time of death, but the men are always the ones who call it in and all of them claim to have been somewhere else at the time. A couple even have alibis. They don’t know how to explain it.”

“Just like St. Louis.”

“Yeah, seems like it.”

Dean rubbed his temples. “Awesome.”

Cas didn’t understand. “What does that mean?”

“It means, there’s most likely a shape shifter in town.”

“We faced one about five years ago in St. Louis. Bastard tried to kill Sam while looking like me.”

“He was also the reason we became seriously hunted by all manners of law enforcement.”

“How do we find it?” Cas was looking forward to having a real hunt this time. The last few they had been on were uneventful for Castiel. She had mostly watched and researched. She was itching to do something.

Sam and Dean exchanged looks. “Cas, I think Sam and I should take care of this. Shape shifters are tough SOBs.”

Castiel looked back and forth between the two. “What? You don’t think I can handle it? I’ve fought against more angels than you two have ever seen. You think I’m afraid of a shape shifter?”

“It’s not that Cas…” Sam put his hand out.

“I came with you to learn.” Castiel looked at Dean. “How can I learn if you keep me locked in here all the time?”

“We’re just trying to keep you safe Cas.”

“If that were true, you would have left me at Bobby’s.”

“Maybe we should’ve.” Dean stood to confront Cas. The former angel squared up to meet him. The two glared at each other.

Sam, seeing a potential fist fight, stood between the two and guided Dean back a little. “Okay, everybody calm down. Dean I want to talk to you for a second.” Sam opened the door and pushed his brother outside. He followed and closed the door behind him.

“Sam, I don’t care what you say I’m not letting Cas come with us on this one.” Dean could hear music bleeding through the door. Cas had turned on Pandora again and was playing the station Sam set up with a Nickelback song playing. Dean rolled his eyes.

“Dean, I agree. She’s probably not ready to fight a shape shifter, but I think we could use her.”

“For what?”

“Think about it Dean. The shifter is going after cute girls as their boyfriend.”
The light clicked on. “No.”

“Dean…”

“No, Sam we are not using her as bait.”

“How else are we going to find the shifter Dean? It could be anybody.”

“We’ll find another way.” Dean moved to walk back into the room.

Sam grabbed Dean’s arm. “Dean, I did find one thing in common. All of the victims had visited a local bar a few days before the murders. Maybe we can go there and ask around.”

“And ask what? Like you said, the shifter could be anybody. I doubt it goes back looking like the same person.”

“That’s why I suggested using Cas. She and I can go in while you watch for anyone looking suspicious or if anyone follows us back to the motel.”

“I don’t know Sam.”

“I’ll be with her the whole time Dean.”

“Until the shifter jumps you and turns into you.”

“It would at least let you know what the shifter looks like and you could stop him.”

Dean put his hands on his hips. He didn’t like it. He really didn’t want to put the two people he cared about in the line of danger. But he also didn’t see another option that would work better. “Fine, but don’t let her out of your sight.”

“I won’t.”

Sam and Dean walked back inside to let Cas in on the plan.

The next night Sam and Cas walked into the bar holding hands. Dean was in the parking lot waiting to see if anyone followed them out. “Come on.” Sam led Cas to the bar and ordered them a couple drinks. They sat on the stools. Sam held her hand lightly. “Relax Cas.” She was looking around the room nervously. “I’m not
going anywhere. You’ll be fine.”

“It’s not me I’m worried about. Dean is the one by himself.”

“The shifter has no reason to go after Dean. He’s here looking for his next target. Hopefully anyway.” Sam thanked the bartender when he brought their drinks. Sam passed Cas her drink. She looked at it for a second before looking around again. “Cas,” Sam squeezed her hand, “you need to act calm. Just pretend you like me.”

She looked at Sam. “I do like you Sam.”

He smiled. “I know, I mean like a boyfriend.”

“Oh, right.” Cas watched their joined hands. “What should we do?”

Sam shrugged. “We could just sit here or we could dance if you wanted.”

Castiel looked at the mass of moving bodies in the middle of the room. It looked hot and uncomfortable. “I think sitting would be nice.”

Sam laughed. “Sounds good.”

Cas did start to drink a little over the next hour. They talked about previous hunting cases and both of their pasts.

“I’ll be right back.” Sam stood up.

“Where are you going?” Castiel grabbed his arm.

“Just the bathroom. I won’t be long.” Sam headed off to the bathroom. He was washing his hands when another man entered the restroom. Sam glanced up in time to see his arms raise and the world went black. Sam fell to the floor.

The cell phone ringing woke Dean from a light sleep. “Sam?”

“Dean, Cas and I are heading back.”

“Alright.”

Dean watched as Sam and Cas left arm in arm. They moved around the corner. Dean started the Impala and followed them. Dean parked a few rooms away and watched the two walk into the room. Dean waited about ten minutes. No one had followed them. Dean left the car and walked to the room and opened the door to see Sam reaching for the handle. He walked out and pulled Dean with him. Sam shut the door.

“What’s up?”

“I think I’m gonna head back to the bar. Maybe I’ll get lucky with another victim.”

“Okay, be careful. Call me if you find something.”

“I will.” Sam turned and walked back to the bar.

Dean turned and entered the motel room and closed the door. Cas was waiting inside. “Where’s Sam?”

“He went to look into the bar more.” Dean took off his jacket and threw it on the bed.

Cas nodded. She pulled out her silver knife and her gun and laid them on the table. “So what do we do now?”
Dean moved a little closer to Castiel. “You tell me.” Castiel turned to face Dean. He kept moving until Cas was backed into the wall.

Castiel wasn’t sure what Dean was doing. He was acting strange. He seemed different. “Dean, are you alright?”

Dean smiled and leaned in to invade Cas’ personal space. Her breath hitched. He pressed his lips to her ear.

“Never better.” Dean pressed against Castiel. He felt her body tremble under him.

“Dean.” Cas pushed on Dean’s chest. Something wasn’t right.

“Relax Cas.” Dean ran his hands up her sides. His fingers caught under her shirt and lifted it slightly. He ran his nails across her skin. She made a noise in her throat. Dean lightly bit her ear before moving to her neck.

Castiel could feel her heart pounding and her fingers dug into Dean’s back. She pulled him closer. He may have been acting strange but Cas had wanted this. She admitted it now. She needed Dean like this.

His fingers laced through her hair and gave a rough pull. “Cas,” Dean moved to kissing her throat, “I’ve wanted to do this for so long. Years.”

Castiel closed her eyes. Dean gave a sharp bite. She winced in pain. His arm around her waist tightened, crushing her into him. Her back left the wall. His pull on her hair tightened more as well. She was starting to feel more pain than anything now. Something was still off. “Dean, stop.” She pushed at his shoulders again.

Dean growled and tugged her hair again. “Stop it. You know you want this as much as I do.”

Castiel knew this wasn’t Dean now. She tensed up and tried to push him away. He pulled her closer and turned them around. Cas ended up being bent over the table. Cas put her hand back to brace herself and felt the handle of her knife. She closed her hand around it. She brought her free hand to Dean’s hair and pulled the short locks, which earned her a grunt. His head moved to her left side. Perfect.

Castiel raised her silver knife above his head. When he lifted his head, Castiel slashed the knife and cut a slice into his face. The man dropped her and stood up, the cut on his cheek sizzling. Castiel reached for the gun but found herself slammed into the wall with a strong hand around her neck.

He squeezed tight enough to leave Castiel gasping for air. She thrashed against him and hit his chest. He held her tight.

Everything was going black. This was it. She was going to die. She then heard the door bust open and a gun shot rang out. Castiel was then on the floor taking quick, deep breaths.

“Cas, are you okay?” Dean knelt beside her. He lifted her head.

Her vision was coming back. She reached out and touched Dean’s cheek. “Dean.”

He nodded. “Did he hurt you?” Cas didn’t seem to hear him. She closed her eyes and tried to catch her breath. Dean saw the bruises on her neck. “Cas, what happened?”

“Dean,” Sam moved over and crouched behind Castiel, “don’t make her talk about this now. She needs to rest for a minute.” Sam took hold of Castiel and helped her stand. The two led her to the table and set her in the chair. “Just sit here, Dean and I are gonna pack up.”

The boys started gathering their clothes and other items. They knew someone would have heard the gun shot and the cops would be coming soon.

Castiel had caught her breath and was watching the boys in silence. Something was bugging her. “So what happened with the shifter? How did it get to Dean?”

“Shifters…there were two of them. One jumped me in the bathroom at the bar and the other one got Dean in the parking lot.” Sam looked at Dean, he was stuffing his clothes into the duffel bag with a little more force than necessary. “They left us outside the bar while they brought you back here. When the ‘Sam’ shifter came back we took him out. We figured the other one was still here with you.” Dean zipped up his bag and threw it on the floor. “Calm down Dean.”

“No, Sam I won’t. That son of a bitch could’ve killed Cas. We shouldn’t have used her.”

“Dean, it wouldn’t have mattered. Once the shifters had our thoughts and memories, they would have known Cas was here.”

“That doesn’t make it a good choice to bring her here.” Dean walked back to Castiel. He kneeled in front of her and looked closer at her neck. He could see the dark marks of fingers but there were other marks too.
“Cas, did he bite you?” Without thinking, Dean reached forward and moved her chin up to have a better look.

Castiel jerked away from his hand and covered her face with her hands. “Don’t.” She wasn’t sure why she had done it, but Dean had backed up and looked like she had slapped him.

Sam put his hand on her shoulder. “Cas, why don’t you just go wait in the car. Dean and I should be done soon. If you see the cops, honk or something.” Cas nodded and stood. Dean still looked hurt and stayed on the floor. Cas left to wait in the car. Sam looked to his brother. “You okay?”

“Yeah.” Dean stood and moved to pick up his bag.

“Dean, just give her a few minutes. She was just attacked.”

Dean nodded. “Did you notice the way her shirt was pushed up and the way she flinched away from me? Those were definitely teeth marks on her neck Sam.”

“You think the shifter…?”

“If he did anything to her…” Dean stopped. He already killed him. He couldn’t do much more to him. “I’ll never forgive myself.”

“I don’t think he had enough time to do anything too serious to her. She won’t be afraid of you forever. Cas is smart she knows it wasn’t you.”

That really didn’t make Dean feel any better. The sound of the Impala horn ended their discussion. They gathered all their stuff and ran to the car. They were driving out of the parking lot when the police pulled up and stormed their old room. “I wonder what they’re gonna think of finding my body dead for the second time.”

The three of them drove a few states over before they stopped at another motel. Dean went inside to buy the room. Castiel had sat in silence for the entire trip. She spoke now to Sam in a whisper. “Sam.”

Sam turned to look at Cas. “Yeah?”

“I don’t blame you or Dean for what happened to me. I’m not angry. I just wanted you to know that.”

Sam smiled. “I know Cas,” Sam glanced back at Dean talking with the girl at the front desk, “and Dean knows that too. He’s just worried about you.” Castiel looked down at her hands and nodded. “Whenever you need or want to talk about what happened, don’t be afraid. Okay?”

Castiel nodded again. She jumped when Dean smacked the top of the car to let them know they were ready to go to the room. Sam grabbed her hand for a second before climbing out of the car. Castiel got out of the car and followed Sam and Dean to the room. Before Dean could walk in, Castiel pulled on his jacket. He stopped and turned around. “Can I talk to you for a minute?”

“Sure.” Dean threw his bag inside and tossed Sam a key before closing the door. Cas pulled him around the side of the building.

“Dean, I want you to know that I don’t blame you for what happened. I know you will blame yourself anyway, but I don’t.” Cas could see Dean’s guilt all over his face. “I know it wasn’t you. I could tell…he was acting strangely. I knew you would never hurt me.”

“What did he do to you Cas?” Dean felt the anger flare up inside.

“It’s not important Dean. I wasn’t really injured and you saved me.” Cas reached out and took Dean’s hand.
“I’m not as fragile as you think Dean.”

Dean wrapped both hands around hers. “I know. Sometimes I forget.”

“Dean, shifters take the thoughts and memories from whoever they look like right?”

Dean nodded. “Yeah, why?”

“So, they most likely wouldn’t lie?”

“Only about who they are.” Cas bit her lip and looked troubled by that answer. “Why, did he say something to you?”

He had. About wanting Castiel for years, but maybe he had been lying. She shook her head. “No, I was just curious.”

Dean nodded. He could still read Cas’ lying face, but he didn’t want to push Cas after what had happened. He put and arm around her shoulder and led her back inside the room. She silently unpacked her things. Dean knew she would be alright. He just hoped no serious damage had been done.
