OK, I'm scrubbing this cage that is going to be Lucy's home. It needs serious scrubbing and I'm using scouring pads, wire brushes and steel wool. The thing is the goldy looking finish is coming away to expose the base metal. I also know that the cage is made by ferplast, a reputable maker. I just talked to my bf about this and he said is sounds like it was a brass cage, am I right? If so, the inside metal is most likely nickle. Which... is safe for birds, but also a very very soft metal.
Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable keep my birds in a cage where there are being exposed to a questionable metal as there may be zinc and other toxic metals in there. The whole "better safe than sorry"
Maybe the cage is still safe, I don't know. And maybe someone else will have a better answer for you.

And I'm not doing it intentionally, it's coming off as I scrub. I'm having to scrub hard just to get a clean result.
Been at it 3 hours now and I'm still only a 3rd of the way through. I'm considering getting the the thing dipped and sandblasted!! LOL
Maybe a new cage is in order after all.

I'm not against buying one but I'm on a budget. Is £50 reasonable? I have some spare cash (it was my birthday last Saturday) but I want to spend wisely. Any suggestions? It's for the lovebird. Oh well, I guess I'll start looking for another freebie then.
