Cage Scrubbing!

Jul 12, 2008 15:58

OK, I'm scrubbing this cage that is going to be Lucy's home. It needs serious scrubbing and I'm using scouring pads, wire brushes and steel wool. The thing is the goldy looking finish is coming away to expose the base metal. I also know that the cage is made by ferplast, a reputable maker. So I'm assuming they wouldn't make a cage where the base ( Read more... )

I think that you should go ahead and find another cage -do you have a craig's list for England? Yea, here - http://london.craigslist.co.uk/pet/... )

Where abouts are you exactly, at the stage I'm at with this thing I'm ready to swim the atlantic and back just for one.

I'm not against buying one but I'm on a budget. Is £50 reasonable? I have some spare cash (it was my birthday last Saturday) but I want to spend wisely. Any suggestions? It's for the lovebird. Oh well, I guess I'll start looking for another freebie then.

Been at this cage for 3 hours and I'm a third of the way through it. Thinking of getting the thing dipped or pulling out my sandblaster!! LOL

This link is for ebay england - if it doesn't work go to the main site and punch in bird cage - make sure you look to the dimensions first before you look to price -

What sort of size should I be looking at realistically for a lovebird?

Re: Me here imahaint July 12 2008, 17:00:50 UTC
at least 30 inches wide
at least 18-24 inches deep
at least 18-24 inches high

That would be the very least amount of space I would have the bird in - remember to go horizontal rather than vertical - birds stay at the top of really tall cages and the rest is wasted - having the cage longer in width - give the bird an opportunity to spread his wings and fly a bit...

I am the typical American when it comes to the metric system - go take a look at this one and see if it suits.

Ahhh Don't worry about what system of measurement you want to use. I'm a carpenter I'm use to conversions.

Sorry for all the questions, just want to get it right. I'm considering getting one of my old rat cages out the loft but people here have told me that might not be a good idea because of the bar spacing. Stumpy likes to stick his head through the bars though!!

No to the rat cage - birds can get their heads stuck - not a good thing.

look around at the sites I sent you and see what you can find...

I'll look some more from here.

Go here - she is on ebay England and she has some decent NEW cages for reasonable shipping. She is in Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom, don't know how far that is from London, but should only take a day or two to ship to you as it is incounty and there would be no customs to clear...I was trying to stay within you birthday money budget. But look at what she has - and remember, even if you have to go vertical rather than horizontal, you can fill the bottom with toys that the lovie would use and make use of the space.

Tell you what - get those birds healthy and in a good cage and get them to love and trust you as their human protector and that is hug enough - OH - and send pictures...

If I can get them happy and healthy I'll be estatic too.

this is just me, but I have never liked the pagoda style as the birds cannot really use the top, where they like to hang out...if you can possibly go without the ornamentation at the top and maybe get one that opens at the top (play time area for the lovie who will realllllly appreciate it) I would go that way.

But if you absolutely have to go that way remember it is a stop gap measure only and you will probably end up going larger within a few months. I'd rather see you get the biggest you can afford now to make lovie comfortable than to have to buy again in the near future.

Thank You. I have to admit I chose the pagoda look because I liked it. **Guilty Blush**

You know I'm going to keep pestering you!

he he on the guilty blush! I have done that myself, succumbed to buying something because it looked nice - only to get home and find out it was impractical - oodles of bucks spent for no satisfaction...LOL....

As to being a pest - nope - you're not and I don't mind. You are new to birds and you are not shy about asking for advice when you need it. There is nothing wrong with that, you are gaining a learning curve.

I had birds when I was a teen. What I was told about keeping them 30 years ago is so different than what I am learning today..so as a bird owner I can honestly say that I am learning and relearning everyday.

Don't worry though, we can muddle through it together - anything is possible and nothing is impossible -
