Picspammy Challenge #10

May 12, 2009 14:20

This month's challenge: Compare and Contrast. I'd blame rosengirl, but erm... I started it. Plus it's something that has been mentioned a couple of times in either Sheldon or Reid related posts. So it's not just me who see the similarities. It's always good to know ;)

Some of the CM caps are snagged from telltale.

. Beautiful Mind genius guys

So yeah, I evilly started with these 2 pics *g* They might be geniuses, but just look at them!

Anyway, let's focus on intellectual similarities and educational background.

They both have IQ of 187, both were child prodigies, both finished high school as pre-adolescents: Sheldon at 11, Reid at 12. They both have multiple degrees, including a PhD in Physics. I'm not sure if Sheldon's other PhD has been mentioned on the show, but if it's Mathematics, they'd have that in common, too. Both went to Caltech. It wouldn't be a stretch to mix two universes and make them meet there. Reid's 27 and Sheldon's probably in his mid to late twenties -- considering how their education overlaps, they could've easily met (make it happen CBS!).

. Strong female figures having significant influence on their lives

Obviously Reid's female co-workers are all strong women, but it's Diana Reid who had and still has the major influence. Reid constructed his life around her illness and he shaped his personality around her unique personality. She was the source of his intellectual stimulation, just like she was and still remains a source of his guilt and the embodiment of his greatest fears.

Sheldon's mother is one of the very few people who can influence him, make him do things. She is the secret weapon - one phone call and he turns into an obedient, apologetic little boy. His sister (and now also Penny) is capable of similar things. They just don't put up with everything he's doing, the way other people in his life usually do.

I wanted to add the element of the absent father figure, but I'm actually not sure about Sheldon. Was his father around?

. Awkward in social interactions

Additionally there's this "no touching" aspect. Reid practically never shake hands, he always waves hello and it takes kidnapping, torture and drugs to make him hug his teammates.
Sheldon's less dramatic - just give him Nimoy's autograph ;)

There's also question of autistic leanings. Although in Reid's case, the writers took a different direction very early on and in Sheldon's case, the writers prefer not to admit he might actually have AS.

. Oblivious to their seduction potential

. Public speeches? Don't let them make one!

. Applying science to popular culture

. Sharing random facts people usually don't care about

. A "unique" sense of humor

... or lack of it? Sheldon apparently doesn't have a sense of humor, although he enjoys the spherical chicken jokes and for someone who supposedly doesn't get sarcasm, he sure can be sarcastic.

Reid's one and only (iirc) attempt at joke on the show ended in silence. Maybe he should've done that quantum physics knock knock joke instead ;)

. Star Trek and Comic Con

They are both total Trekkies. And silly JJ, I'd definitely go to the Comic Con with Reid. Hell, I'd pay to see him in a costume!

. Chess love

Seeing them play chess would be epic! (again, make it happen, CBS!)

. Peculiar fashion choices

While Sheldon usually sticks to superhero t-shirts, once he suits up, he opts for the Reid's beloved Mr. Rogers style.

and finally

. They fuel my hand fetish!
