scary movies and memories

We just watched A Quiet Place which I actually enjoyed. It was about my level of scary, all about the tension and suspense but at a PG-13 kind of way. It felt like a missing chapter of the Cloverfield story, but maybe that was the the creature design. It was a TENSE 90 minutes.

I went to go rate it on Letterboxd and noticed that a new Halloween ( Read more... )

The Quiet Place is one of those rare horror films that manages to capture the tension so perfectly due to the nature of how it tells its story. Trying to survive through the lack of sound is such a perfect way of getting that anxiety and tension up real quick. From Jordan Peele to John Krasinski, there's just something about people who are known for their comedy making such interesting horror stories that is really inspiring for some reason.

I think the only Halloween movie I ever watched fully was Halloween: H20 when that first came out. I've only seen snippets of the first Halloween, but it's very iconic that I think most people kinda already know what happens with it even if they've never seen it. But I do want to see it in full at some point. I'm only vaguely interested in the new Halloween that's coming out, only because it is a direct sequel to the first movie and I'm curious to see how that plays out since you don't really need to see the rest of the franchise to understand it.

Any scary story memories to share? What was the ( ... )

There are a few films out there, but I think they are hard to find when the marketing machine of wholesome Disney ruling over children's films. Though I'm wondering if "The house with the clock in the wall" will have some of that weirdness. I think "Coraline" is a great example of a modern kids creepy (though McKean's illustrations in the book are way scarier than the animated characters IMHO)

I still remember the night we rented 'Scream' - it was summer and we left the windows open and a neighbor knocked on our door and scared the crap out of us but they were concerned because they could hear the SCREAMING coming from inside our house LOL.

But you are right - where are 'The Dark Crystal' and 'Labyrinth' of this generation? I guess they are probably buried somewhere on Netflix...the weird kids will find them somehow.

I love Halloween. I forgot that sequel was coming out.

Generally, I won't watch anything paranormal, it freaks me out. I don't mind serial killers and that sort of thing.

I'm the other way - paranormal/monsters don't bother me because I know they are not real, but serial killers get in my head because I'm like "THEY ARE IN MY HOUSE OMG AAAAAAAH!"

Except for Hannibal Lector because he is so over the top he is more of a monster than a real person. So I love Hannibal.

I have since this was posted watched A Quiet Place and I really liked it but I it was sooo tense. I looked away a lot waiting for the jump scares. Also I think it ruined my life for... spoilery reasons. :) (Ahem, I love John Krasinski)

I'm glad you liked it! Just the right amount of jump scares for wussy me LOL. But yeah, the spoilery thing :((((

Still, the young deaf girl was fantastic! I hope we see her in more films!

Mine was A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) ... I saw the pre-credits scene with Freddy making his glove, and I was FASCINATED. I don't think my uncle 'let' me watch it, as such - but I was in the room, and he didn't kick me out... so I guess it was tacit acceptance, lol. :-)

I haven't seen A Quiet Place! Yeah that's def my level kind of scary. I don't like torture horror movies at all. The House of Wax remake was pushing it for me on the torture front. I spent some time hiding behind a pillow lol ( ... )

Yeah, I am not one for gore. I like the more cerebral horror, I can scare myself on my own, thank you very much!!

that sounds like a Twilight Zone episode, I know there was one with mannequins. Or it might have been "inspired by" that episode LOL. Mannequins are creepy so it wouldn't take much to turn them into a horror story!

OMG the 80s IT was probably one of my earlier horror movies, but it was made-for-TV so it never got as bad as, say, the new movie. It was scary and disturbing...and then I read the book and that was WAY MORE scary and disturbing. And now I'm realizing I must have read that book when I was...11? Now THAT is disturbing LOL. I'm sure I read some Star Wars books afterwards to cleanse my pallet.

I can't deal with torture porn scary movies. NOPE. One of my friends was swearing by that movie Hostel and I was like, nope. NOPE. I refuse to watch it.

It's entirely possible that it was a Twilight Zone episode lmao. I was a kid and it was short so it was either an episode or a movie short and holy crap I'm still shook to this day. I'm easily scared by any scary stories involving dolls and mane quins to this day lol!

Right?! Man I think I was 9 when I saw the movie lmao. Looking back I'm like, why did my dad's bff's wife think that was a great CHILDREN'S movie?! OMG and you read the book when you were around 11?! Damn that must've been crazy lol! My younger brother read half the book when he was in high school and was like "I CAN'T FINISH" lol. He loves the mini series and the new movie now though.

First scary movie: Ghostbusters.
Watched it with my dad.

I have a hard time with a lot of the modern horror movies. They're often too much for me to handle.

I like my B-horror flicks though like Wolfcop and Vamp U.

I was too scared to watch the first 10 minutes of Ghostbusters for a really long time. I think the librarian ghost caught me off guard as a kid and scared me and I was scarred and just knew not to watch that sequence. Eventually I got the courage up to keep my eyes open and just laughed at how not scary it was.

I love that movie though, can quote it end to end.
