I think banning the burqa and/or niqab (I learned something new!) is a bad idea. I think women should be given the right to choose whether or not they wear it. I don't think they should be forced to or forced not to. By anyone.
My mother had to threaten one of her old bosses with legal action if he didn't stop demanding that she come to work without wearing hijab. She never wears burqa and I never understood why someone would choose to of their own free will (simply because it seems like it's bound to be so hot and stuffy and uncomfortable), but if that's their choice, so be it.
A friend of mine in Saudi Arabia says that the burqa is good there because it keeps the sand off you, and keeps you cooler. That's her reasoning, anyway. She's grown up wearing hijabs and burqas.
...huh. Interesting. I suppose a lot of it depends on the person and the burqa. How tolerant a person is of heat, what material it's made of, where they live, etc.
Still, it's not something I'd ever choose. (I'm not Muslim, but I love some of the hijabs I see sometimes and I'd totally wear them from time to time if it weren't for the sticky White Privilege and ignorant-cultural-appropriation issues. I don't want to mock or offend people.)
That being said, I could see banning burqas in certain situations - posing for an ID photo? Dude, they need to see your face on your ID. Deal with it. But banning altogether? No.
I agree with the opinion that Burqa's imprison women, but then again I think religion as a whole imprisons people.
With that said, I don't support any laws that would prohibit people from dressing however they choose. If France is concerned about women being forced into certain roles by religious husbands (and this is a valid concern), tailor the laws to address that concern. Crack down on domestic violence. Women (and men) have the right to choose how they live their lives, and the right to make decisions that I personally find abominable.
I hate that he was greeted with extended applause.
Because this is nothing that should be greeted with appluse, am I right?
No one should have the right to ban what should be worn, it would be like banning Orthodox women from wearing wigs or wearing floor length skirts for a similar reason. They should have the right to wear it, government should not get involved in religion.
Exactly. If he was saying that sort of thing about Orthodox Jews, all hell would be breaking loose. But it seems that it's fair game for him to say it about Muslims. It's a dangerous double standard which is only going to further alienate people with Islamic backgrounds.

That said, I still think the "needing to hide from men's stare" reasoning is fucked up.
How about teaching men to stop leering. D:

But yes, it's not going to help anything if you target one specific group of people :/
