*snort*

My mother had to threaten one of her old bosses with legal action if he didn't stop demanding that she come to work without wearing hijab. She never wears burqa and I never understood why someone would choose to of their own free will (simply because it seems like it's bound to be so hot and stuffy and uncomfortable), but if that's their choice, so be it.

UNVEILING =/= LIBERATION OMG.

A friend of mine in Saudi Arabia says that the burqa is good there because it keeps the sand off you, and keeps you cooler. That's her reasoning, anyway. She's grown up wearing hijabs and burqas.

...huh. Interesting. I suppose a lot of it depends on the person and the burqa. How tolerant a person is of heat, what material it's made of, where they live, etc.

Still, it's not something I'd ever choose. (I'm not Muslim, but I love some of the hijabs I see sometimes and I'd totally wear them from time to time if it weren't for the sticky White Privilege and ignorant-cultural-appropriation issues. I don't want to mock or offend people.)

That being said, I could see banning burqas in certain situations - posing for an ID photo? Dude, they need to see your face on your ID. Deal with it. But banning altogether? No.

Makes sense to me! I hate getting sand everywhere. :(

that used to be its actual purpose: keeping you cooler and keeping the sand off you.

Doesn't that seem counter productive to make it BLACK though? A pale colored one would reflect more of the sun's heat, wouldn't it? :U idk I have never lived in asian or middle eastern deserts, just US ones. XD

I'm taking anthropology courses and one of my professors from last semester did/does all of her work in the middle easy, and she says it's crazy, but the black really is cooler in some areas. Most of the tents of the Bedouin are black (the color of the hair they're made with) and according to her, they're much cooler than outside the tent.

Of course, they're made from all different colors and as far as I know, color depended mostly on a person's choice (it could also be cultural/area-specific though too)

I can see that being true; the men in those countries tend to wear very long, loose-fitting clothes as well.

Yeah. I guess a lot of it is related to comfort. Though covering the face entirely I don't quite understand.

If you look back a few decades ago, back in the 50s and 60s people used to wear scarves on their heads.
