So they basically baited a trap so that they could 'lawfully' kill someone. I am very disturbed right now.

Looks like it. There's this article, with the following quote:

Paul cited a witness who alleges that Kaarma issued threats at a hairstyling salon on April 23. The hairstylist, Felene Sherbondy, quoted Kaarma as saying: "I'm just waiting to shoot some fucking kid," according to the prosecution's affidavit.

They're reporting that the young man's host family lived in the same area as the shooter, and that he was looking for something to drink, as his host family always had Gatorade in the garage. So, if he was looking to steal anything at all, he wanted to steal a drink, and I'm sure he did not entertain the thought that trespassing on someone's property could result in his being shot ( ... )

It feels like everyone who visits/studies over here should be taught to treat us like rabid dogs who might go off at any second. :( I hate the moronic gun culture in this damn country and all the hair-trigger assholes who are allowed to own life-ending weaponry and the gun makers who work overtime trying to make it easier and easier to kill someone under the flimsiest of reasons.

See, if I had not known about the drink thing; I'd have gone into the garage to call out that someone left their purse outside, because I've seen that happen in my neighborhood before.

But knowing my god damn melanin count; I'd probably be stone cold dead after going "does someone need help?".

Isn't this considered entrapment and shouldn't that nullify self defense? The fact that it's planned out would make it pre-meditated murder, wouldn't it?

I think that's why they mentioned in THIS article, that he's being charged with the deliberate murder of Diren.

Its up to the lawyers and such to get the jury to make that stick, and honestly it ought to. They seem to have enough evidence/witnesses to prove that Kaarma and his partner planned to just shoot someone and get away with it.

Jesus, when I was a kid we had a neighbor who routinely forgot to shut her garage door, we'd totally just go hit the garage close button when we saw it and went about our business.

When I was a kid, when we saw cars with lights left on in garages, we'd frequently go in and turn them off.

I feel sorry for the kid and his family, but it's not wise to go into somebody's garage on residential property, in the first place...

Hardly needs to be said.

As in, I'm wrong for saying it, or because it's obvious? It's not obvious to the kid's father (although he is, quite understandably, blinded by grief... ) and it's not obvious to the many people using this incident to decry U.S gun culture, which - while I think that is a good cause - glosses over the fact that the victim probably didn't have noble intentions to begin with...

Petty crime is not worth getting shot over, but if that is what it turns out to be, then youngsters shouldn't be trespassing in the first place... so maybe this example will teach an impressionable youth somewhere a harsh lesson, and some good can possibly come from the whole sorry incident?

I so hope the family has one helluva attorney. They baited him, they left the purse in the garage. If it was me, I would have grabbed the purse and then knocked on the door to say 'yo you left your purse in the garage and the door was open.' How can they be so sure he wasn't gonna do that? With jackasses like these, it'll get to the point where we may see someone who needs help and refuse to because that person might kill us.

If I'd seen something like that, I might have thought that somebody could have fainted or had some other problem and would have gone to check, because no one would intentionally put a bag there and leave the door open... oh, unless they wanted to create a situation where they could shoot a person.

I think we're already at that point. My mum's ex-boyfriend was attacked with an iron bar after getting out of his car to help somebody who was lying in the road... Sadly, I think he'll now think twice before he helps somebody, again.
