that's a pretty fast turnaround for a crisis comm, I am used to working at places where they take 3 days to get something out, and it's never fast enough.

Francis is basically a politician. Publicly he probably feels he needs to be seen as inclusive to save the relevance of Catholicism in the West, but privately he needs to express himself more conservatively to prevent too much dissent among Cardinals and Bishops. As for where his true feelings lie I think he's socially conservative (abortion, sex, gays etc) but fiscally has some socialist ideals/genuine concern for the poor
