Vatican Apologizes After Pope Francis Uses Homophobic Slur During a Meeting With Bishops

Pope Francis issued a rare apology after he was accused of using a highly pejorative slur to refer to gay men in a closed-door session with bishops.

His choice of words appeared to counter his efforts to thaw the relationship with the LGBTQ+ community. https://t.co/cYb3tWYsdI

A follow up to this post.

“Pope Francis is aware of the articles that came out recently about a conversation, behind closed doors, with the bishops of the CEI (Italian Episcopal Conference),” said Matteo Bruni, the press office director for the Holy See.

“As he (Pope Francis) has said on several occasions, ‘in the Church there is room for everyone, everyone! No one is useless, no one is superfluous, there is room for everyone. Just as we are, everyone.’”

“The Pope never intended to offend or express himself in homophobic terms, and he extends his apologies to those who felt offended by the use of a term, reported by others.”
