Vatican Apologizes After Pope Francis Uses Homophobic Slur During a Meeting With Bishops

May 28, 2024 10:54

Pope Francis issued a rare apology after he was accused of using a highly pejorative slur to refer to gay men in a closed-door session with bishops.

His choice of words appeared to counter his efforts to thaw the relationship with the LGBTQ+ community. https://t.co/cYb3tWYsdI

I mean I can believe he didn't know the word was a slur when he used it but the fact that the comment was met with "incredulous laughter" in the room shows how "moral" these leaders really are. Plus, even if Francis didn't mean it as a slur, the context was still in support about excluding gay men from the priesthood.

I'm wondering if in Francis mind if it's related to the Church's sex scandals? Like thinking that every predator Priest must just be gay? I'm sure some of those priests were gay but idk I'm wondering if the Church blames the scandals on "gay Priests"/homosexuality and not on their celibacy policies or that they recruit predators who will abuse whoever they can and that just happens to be younger boys typically? I can just imagine the Church leadership blaming it on homosexuality so they don't need to do any other introspection on their own part.

His own parents were Italian, it’s not like it’s a language he had to learn when he got the job as pope…no way he didn’t know, he wasn’t expecting someone to talk to the press!

ya probably, but I think either way he still said what he said to discriminate against gay men from joining the priesthood. So even if he didn't mean to use a slur it's still shitty. But worse obviously if he did.

It's also something he wouldn't say in public, so it kinda shows what he's like behind closed doors, or at least with other church leaders ugh.

Back when my uncle attended Seminary (he's in his 70s now, out, proud, and very much not of the faith), it was *extremely* common for closeted men to join. To hear him tell the tale, it was either that or beard up for life.

“he extends his apologies to those who felt offended by the use of a term, reported by others.”

tbh i'm surprised this got out. i wonder what bishop in the closed door meeting leaked it and if they were actually offended or if they just hate him.

Probably the latter

Definitely the latter. I bet the leaker laughed as loud as anyone but used it to try to damage whatever inroads Francis was making for the Church with LGBTQ+ people.
