Are the days of 100 episodes over for streaming shows? Alex Kurtzman weighs in

#StarTrek fans have talked a lot about the amount of episodes in a season in the new series. I asked Alex Kurtzman if any Trek series will ever reach 100 episodes again and he broke down the complicated state of streaming for me: https://t.co/ARQKg3Pobn

I really miss 20+ episodes of TV shows. Filler episodes are needed to know the characters and now if we even have 1 a season it feels like it cuts into the plot because we only have so much time and now we have to worry about shows being renewed more than ever

Also doesn't help that most pop culture shows are streaming across different platforms and who has time for that?

Yes piracy is the way but it'd be nice to just turn on my TV to watch something new without having to sign in to anything. Idk what I'm saying.

I feel like there's so many streaming shows, they focus more on the quantity of the shows rather than the quality. Like every week there's a new show coming out and then it's harder to get invested in it because there's less episodes and then everyone moves onto the next thing.

Right? Streamers always complain that people just aren't watching things or are quitting things but when you release 50 new shows/movies a month times 10 streamers, no has time to watch everything. By the time you get to a show you were interested in, it's been too long and the streamers decide no one is watching and cancel it. Viewers are afraid to get invested in anything any more.

I kind of get it from a business point of view. Unfortunately everything is about growth nowadays and thus you need new content to be attractive enough for new users to bother to subscribe. You are not gonna catch new users with an "old show" like no one is going to catch up on X seasons unless it is a sleeper hit.

Obviously sucks as a viewer of show X though.

I always forget Orange is the New Black lasted as long as it did because I quit after [Spoiler (click to open)]Poussey died.

Tbf the quality of it as a show went downhill after that as well

I feel like thats when most people checked out. IDK many people who continued and I've not heard any internet discourse or chat whatsoever about those final seasons

I hate these short seasons. I don’t like that every episode has to mean so much - I WANT the filler where we just get to enjoy our characters. I saw a meme recently about this that was about how we need the filler and mentioned an episode of the OC where Ryan wanted to play soccer and then it was never brought up again lol. But I feel like those filler episodes give you a second to breathe and let you build out a longer overarching story, idk. Then when streaming shows started, they were indeed 13 episodes, and now we’re down to 10 and sometimes even 8. It’s whack kno

90210 had a 3 season subplot about Brenda getting her drivers license. We couldn't get that in today's TV landscape.

This kind of reminds me of the running gag on Buffy where Buffy was a horrendously bad driver lol.

Those kind of unique and fun quirks get lost when seasons and series are so short these days.

It's funny you mention the OC because I just read the oral history where they talked extensively about they burned through so much plot in the first season AND because it was so long, everyone was burned out

I think most people watch two seasons of a streaming show, and they check out, you know, and that's not specific to Trek.

Part of that is probably because it takes forever for a new season to come out. We went from 4 month hiatuses to 2+ year hiatuses and those 2 years in between are filled with more Content for you to consume. Not great for longevity.

Also because Netflix cancels almost everything after 2 seasons.

It’s ridiculous. Why does it take so long?

I truly do not know lol. It's especially bad for shows that have children or teenagers who are growing up but don't want to do time skips too, these kids look like preteens one season and then like they're on the other end of puberty in the next when only a few months or a year max has passed in show time, it's kinda funny.
