#StarTrek fans have talked a lot about the amount of episodes in a season in the new series. I asked Alex Kurtzman if any Trek series will ever reach 100 episodes again and he broke down the complicated state of streaming for me: https://t.co/ARQKg3Pobn

I think most people watch two seasons of a streaming show, and they check out, you know, and that's not specific to Trek.

Part of that is probably because it takes forever for a new season to come out. We went from 4 month hiatuses to 2+ year hiatuses and those 2 years in between are filled with more Content for you to consume. Not great for longevity.

Also because Netflix cancels almost everything after 2 seasons.

It’s ridiculous. Why does it take so long?

I truly do not know lol. It's especially bad for shows that have children or teenagers who are growing up but don't want to do time skips too, these kids look like preteens one season and then like they're on the other end of puberty in the next when only a few months or a year max has passed in show time, it's kinda funny.

I feel like post-pandemic things have gotten worse and worse. it made sense for there to be a lag when no one was working and everyone was on lockdown, but it's now been years and shows are still lagging behind badly. Though, there were also strikes right after the pandemic. So. We've been hobbled badly lately.

I'd guess one reason is because unlike a network TV show where actors are locked in and as a result have to forgo other projects. Which makes sense considering residuals are almost non-existent, so since they're unwilling to pay more streaming services have less leverage to lock people down into a commitment.

So they have to wait for the stars to align schedule wise for everyone to be available and even then you get things like the Arrested Development season 4 or the last season of Stranger Things, where main characters are all off doing separate plots and never are in the same scene because everyone is off doing other projects.

I read something about Netflix taking so much longer with post-production because they have to have their show dubbed in multiple languages before release? It’s definitely become annoying how there’s next to no urgency any more though, it seems like it’s gone from one extreme to the other as I know that network shows had to deal with some ridiculous deadlines at times when a show had to come out by a certain date, but in contrast to that streaming services don’t seem to care at all about keeping up momentum for their most popular shows like say Wednesday which hasn’t even began filming the second season yet as far as I know, or the current situation with Euphoria.

Even HBO used to regularly get new seasons out every year like clockwork, bit it just seems like everything’s gone to shit these past few years, it’s become about churning out more and more new content instead of nurturing their existing shows

I'm still baffled at how shows like Ginny & Georgia take forever to film. Like what is going on exactly that it takes a teen show 2+ years to film. It's not like they have heavy action or special fx.

I think part of it is Netflix holds onto shows for like 6 months+ after they finish filming and then it takes them another 3 months to renew/cancel.

They'd rather churn out a million 1 season shows instead of hunkering down on a handful and being consistent
