Are the days of 100 episodes over for streaming shows? Alex Kurtzman weighs in

#StarTrek fans have talked a lot about the amount of episodes in a season in the new series. I asked Alex Kurtzman if any Trek series will ever reach 100 episodes again and he broke down the complicated state of streaming for me: https://t.co/ARQKg3Pobn

I hate these short seasons. I don’t like that every episode has to mean so much - I WANT the filler where we just get to enjoy our characters. I saw a meme recently about this that was about how we need the filler and mentioned an episode of the OC where Ryan wanted to play soccer and then it was never brought up again lol. But I feel like those filler episodes give you a second to breathe and let you build out a longer overarching story, idk. Then when streaming shows started, they were indeed 13 episodes, and now we’re down to 10 and sometimes even 8. It’s whack kno

90210 had a 3 season subplot about Brenda getting her drivers license. We couldn't get that in today's TV landscape.

This kind of reminds me of the running gag on Buffy where Buffy was a horrendously bad driver lol.

Those kind of unique and fun quirks get lost when seasons and series are so short these days.

It's funny you mention the OC because I just read the oral history where they talked extensively about they burned through so much plot in the first season AND because it was so long, everyone was burned out

I still can't believe season 1 was 27 episodes long!

It feels like a lot of shows are more concerned with packing in shocking plot twists rather than giving us time to get to know the characters as nuanced three dimensional characters. Instead we are getting sketches of people, like this is the angsty character because she wears black.

Yeah I think that 13 episodes would work okay even, but it’s getting a bit ridiculous now with only 8 episodes a season, especially as so often it’s a 2 year wait between seasons now as well, so it’s no wonder viewers aren’t staying invested in a lot of these streaming shows. It’s definitely become more about just throwing new content at us all the time instead

Having shows run year round kept people engaged and talking about them, whereas these days it’s hard to even remember what happened in the previous season by the time a new season comes around.
