Unsolved Mysteries: who is Max Davis?

Sep 07, 2021 07:14

Okay, ONTD detectives, it's time to investigate an unsolved mystery!

In Mindy Kaling's essay Big Shot, she says that in 2016 she spent the holidays with her family in Honolulu. While having Christmas dinner at Duke's in Waikiki, the waiter told her that another celebrity was having dinner at the same restaurant.

I was gonna say Matt Damon but he gets awards and that’s too obvious….then was thinking Adam Sandler but people genuinely hate his movies….🤔. It’s early and I’m stumped. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Adam Sandler is the only one who fits all the clues. Lots of terrible movies with lowbrow mainstream appeal, is old enough to be adored by Mindy (the Wedding Singer was released when she was still a teenager, and he has gotten serious critical props for a bunch of movies (Uncut Gems, Punch-Drunk Love), only to be ignored by the Oscars.

Tom Cruise??

The main reason I don't think it's Tom Cruise is that it seems like Scientology has groomed him to be very polite. If he was overwhelmed and forgot to stop by her table on his way out, he would have sent her a card or a thank you note or something afterward. He's known for giving nice gifts to the cast and crew of his movie projects (as well as sending cakes to basically everyone he's ever worked with throughout the years every Christmas).

I was going to say that paying for his meal probably would have gotten her on the cake list.

That's literally just what I was about to say. That's definitely a "get sent a Cruise cake every year for life" kind of a thank you from Tom.

I think its Adam Sandler.

He was notoriously snubbed for Uncut Gems - https://ew.com/oscars/2020/02/05/nominated-for-nothing-uncut-gems/

I can't figure out what movie he was in that would have a billboard up in early 2017 - maybe Sandy Wexler?

He and Conan have been friends for a long time from early SNL days.

Yeah must have been Sandy Wexler, was released on Netflix in April. The Meyerowitz Stories wasn’t out until October, though it was at Cannes in May.

What's really throwing me off about this is the "movies that literally every American pretends to hate but secretly loves". I can't think of a middle-aged A-List actor involved with that kind of franchise or series of movies.

At first I was thinking Shia LeBeouf and Transformers (idk, maaaaaybe he was considered A-list in 2016?), but he's definitely not middle aged.

Then I was thinking Bill Murray and all his Wes Anderson movies, but he's also definitely not middle-aged.

Idk, Vin Diesel????? But then he wasn't in anything while she was "growing up".

Idk, the general American movie-going public loves a lot of stupid bullshit movies.

Nicolas Cage?
Plenty of people would be ashamed to be called his fans nowadays. I don't know if he knows Conan though
