This is weird; I'm not used to being the popular one in anything.  Even at chemistry summer research programs (i.e. paid science camp).  It's flattering, I'll try to keep people's entries afloat, but still...just weird.

A little late, but for those who hadn't found out and were curious, NC prevailed over SC 42-38 to win the 2nd Carolina Cup.  There's now a nice trophy provided by Denise Mahnken, and we got little gold medals and the satisfaction of evening the series at 1 apiece.  She also provided lottery tickets for all the high losses, which is actually a ( Read more... )

Off to David Gibson's house tomorrow, for the 2nd installment of the Carolina Cup, our own little Scrabble "border war".  Last year SC pulled out a 1-win victory (40.5-39.5, the last game to come in was a tie), but this year our team is much stronger, with 6 of the top 10 active players plus the reigning NSSC champs comprising the NC team.  ( Read more... )

While I didn't have quite as good a weekend as vinylchances, I certainly exceeded my expectations going in.  14-3 over both days (8-1 followed by 6-2), $210, new TWL peak of 1820, plus I grabbed the top ranking in North Carolina.  Now my next goal, top rating in all the Caroli...oh crap.  Yeah that's not happening for awhile.

Well that was an incredible weekend.  16 consecutive wins to start, 8 in the TWL early bird (including my first rated win over a current 2000 player) and 8 in the Collins main event.  Winning 11 rated games in one day without a loss has to be close to a NASPA record, right?  Then I had to hang on for dear life to hold off Dave Koenig (going 5-2 in ( Read more... )
