A little late, but for those who hadn't found out and were curious, NC prevailed over SC 42-38 to win the 2nd Carolina Cup. There's now a nice trophy provided by Denise Mahnken, and we got little gold medals and the satisfaction of evening the series at 1 apiece. She also provided lottery tickets for all the high losses, which is actually a pretty cool idea.
As for my results, they weren't what I had hoped for. After two quick 480+ games, I was stuck in grind-em-out ugliness or straight out baggings. 6-4 +180 or so, and only one of those losses was salvageable on my end if I play better early. Felt like I was letting my team down by not playing up to the #1 seed, but thankfully my teammates picked me up, including a crucial 6-4 record from our bottom seed Erik Salgado. I had some nice plays like (PANG)OLIN for 33 and (D)AFTNESs with one in the bag to clinch another win. I was also on the end of a 230 point INEXP(E)RT, which won Alan Riechmann $10 (5 for high play and 5 for second biggest upset for the resulting win). All because the only place I could play STIPULE gave him the E in the right place. Just kind of meh, but hoping to get those clunky tiles out of the way before Nationals.
As always, the Gibsons were gracious hosts, and my wife now wants them to adopt us so she can live in their house and I can give David a sparring partner. Lots of pictures were taken, and Erik's mom Adair put together a framed collage of the tournament and mailed it to us last week. Such a nice woman, I'm glad she and the rest of the School Scrabble parents have taken such an interest in getting the kids to tourneys like these, flung out to the far corners of the Carolinas. Amalan Iyengar is the newest local up-and-comer, and I think he'll do some damage in Division 4 at Nationals, for those of you looking for a potential NSC Roto edge. Kid beat Randy Hersom at Chez Katya and took me to the wire as well.
