The calm before the storm...

I'm just playing catch-up this past week and this week, because from here on out, between work and other life, things may get a bit screwy. In a good way, and a lot of it self-inflicted. I just wanted to say that there are actually a lot of people who believe that Roosevelt is given more credit then he deserves. We've talked about this in class, several time, and I was even assigned a book for one of my political thought classes. It seems to me - and many other people who are much more accomplished than I - that FDR's New Deal would have caused a lot more problems in the long run. WWII is what saved the day, and FDR - while still a good president - had not as much to do with that as people give him credit for. Sometimes, I wonder if all this study of history and finding out dirt about past presidents is really worth it. I was perfectly happy picturing FDR the lovable guy from Annie (the broadway musical, not so much the film. Although I do love the Carol Burnett film.) and not thinking of him as a person who actually made tough decisions, who was probably in a lot of pain, and who changed his mind a few times ( ... )

As I said, I have no problems if someone wants to offer a critique of Roosevelt -- it's the word choice. And the thing that really gets me about this book is it's brand new -- it JUST came out this June! If it were older -- written a couple decades ago -- I could have overlooked this as an example of a more unenlightened time. But that is NOT the case. Another thing that bothers me is that so far, I'm the only one who seemed perturbed by this. No other critique that I've read has remarked on the poor phrasing (to put it lightly).
