Happy Fourth of July

Happy Fourth of July to all the Americans on my f-list!

In honor of the holiday and in the light of recent events, I recommend this entertaining offering from loltheorists:

I admit I am sceptical about Donna, mainly becuase I've seen more of Catherine Tate as Catherine Tate - sketch artist comedian and thus that skews my perspective. It will be...interesting...we shall see.

I am still at a losss why FA has said Martha in Torchwood is a chance to expand her character as they barely know what to do with the characters they've got with things only picking up toward the end. So I don't hold out much for Martha there. Ah well.

I am still trying to get over the words - Kylie Minogue and Christmas special.

I don't know how much expansion she'll get in three episodes before she's shipped back to DW and then finally written out before the fifth season. Do you think we'll get a regeneration? I'm hoping so.

Alas, I think they're going to have to pry David Tennant's cold, dead hands from the part. On the good side, he won't be messing up other shows.

Dang. I'm sick of his ugly face and his Doctor (his fault/the writers fault) was even uglier.

Hmm... I don't know if I'm thrilled with Donna coming aboard. I was not a fan of hers from TRB. I can't with that Martha will have more screen time, so I'll go and sulk.

I'm guardedly optimistic about Donna, because she had the nous to smack him and tell him to stop. Which is a Very Good Thing in my book. And she was a surprise, which is a good thing, too.

The thing is, they made a huge, awful, irreparable mistake by saddling Martha with the crush. I refuse to call it unrequited love because it arrives full blown in the first episode, and never progresses one way or the other past that. RTD can do unrequited love, in QAF, it's the main theme, but this just wasn't it. They wrote themselves into a corner, and while I'm glad Martha had the dignity to walk away, it's just wrong in all the ways we've been discussing. I don't know how they resolve that without a little palate-clearing. I also hope that when she does come back, it's for the adventure, and not for the Doctor, and I don't really want him to fall in love with her, not because Rose was "special" but because it just makes such a mess. It's not the only way men and women can relate ( ... )

Having Ten and Martha the best of friends and traveling buddies was what I really wanted. I did not want them to become lovers. I'm glad that they didn't, but as you've said, the crush thing got in the way of a lot of greatness and it made her character seem to unnecessarily obsessed with him.

I stand firm on the notion that her crush wasn't entirely of her own making. Ten did do that "genetic transfer" thing in the first episode. I believe that he transferred some of his "self-love" to her and therefore bam! She was infatuated! :)

To me, that's the worst part of this. It got in the way of everything.

I think Ten is so self-centered that he really doesn't think about anyone or anything but his own happiness. It would be awkward to agree with Martha that she's not second best, so he doesn't do it. I don't believe he loves Rose as much as he did when he was Nine, but he wants someone who will unconditionally adore him (never mind that he wasn't the one she fell in love with). And he will forgive the Master for torturing him, or killing 600 million people, or whatever, just to get the upper hand, but the Family of Blood, who are just obeying the natural drive to survive and reproduce and in the process killing a small number of humans, he not only punishes but punishes with unbelievable cruelty. I mean, aesthetically, I kind of liked it, but it repulsed me at the same time.

And Martha got a thanks and a hug?

GRRRRRRRRR!

Thanks so much for the Jefferson macro. Our American forefathers are definitely rolling in their proverbial graves over the ridiculousness that exists in the government today.

Just wanted to chime in with a concurrence on Tate. I don't like her but I'm approaching it with a 'wait and see' attitude. I'm hoping she can knock Ten down a peg or two.

I just hope it doesn't become unwatchable. Tennant is irritating and always has been. The magic Eccleston created vanished as soon as Tennant flashed his pearly whites. I just keep reminding myself that I did not care for some of the actors, in the past, who played the Doctor. It's the fictional character of the Doctor and his marvelous time ship that I grew to love. Here's hoping Tennant doesn't destroy that either.

Thanks so much for the Jefferson macro.

No problem! That was the best thing I've seen in several days.

As for Doctors, it's strange, but I've never been a huge DW fan in the past, I was more a Blake's 7 girl (see, I like dark when it's done well). But I was fairly happy with all the Doctors, even if I didn't pay that much attention to them. Ten is the first one who really gets on my nerves...although Four did have a tendency to, and I likedSix as I recall!

Ack! I didn't get a couple of these notifications on time and they got buried in my inbox below the scrollbar - apologies!

I love that Jefferson macro. It's the way it plays on the macro convention (it's almost as good as DW one I saw which was about LOTTL - "Jesus imagery. You're doing it right, but lord god please stop!")

I have the same problem with Tennant, of course. I think I'm particularly irritated by him because I don't think he's entirely useless. I think he's talented to a certain degree, but he also strikes me as lazy. The fact that he can give a decent performance with the right director just makes me more convinced that he has extremely bad taste in his choices. But I don't like the way Ten has been written, either.

Okay, now I seriously want to write you ficcy Nine/Rose presents since I just spent like an *hour* laughing my ass off at loltheorists.

Clearly I lack erudite humor in my life (I say as I sit here eating a peach and reciting bits of Prufrock in my head) and that's a great site to fill the void. I was dying over Marx and Schroedinger's Cat and was all pleased with myself that despite a crappy public school education I even know who Derrida *is*! LOL!

I owe you one. I *never* laugh (like maybe a couple times a year) and that made me laugh repeatedly.

Thank you.

My notifications are going screwy again! And this was dated correctly, too, so it ended up buried in my inbox. Grrr.

loltheorists is one of my favourite places. Have you seen the animated Schrödinger's cat?

Hey, I won't say no. But you could do Nine/Jack (or Claude/?) if you want to be slashy. Or Ben/John (Othello) if you want to be really slashy! (Have you seen that version?)
