[The camera's propped up straight on a table and is pointed at an Asian kid with short black hair and a blue cabbie hat. The kid looks a little young to be on this ship of fools (fourteen? fifteen? sixteen?), but is sitting up politely and has a notepad out and a pen like this is going to be an Important Professional Conversation.]Good afternoon ( Read more... )

You're a consulting detective? At your age?

[Naoto is so used to this question by now it's not even that awkward.] Yes, part of a long line.

I understand it seems a little improbable.

Congratulations, certainly, then. How many cases have you worked on?

I came here after completing my sixteenth. [She's clearly proud here, and a little happy. That last one had been the most intense year of her life, and she wouldn't even have suspected it had a deeper layer on her own.]

Are you just curious, or do you have a professional stake in this?

Hiiiiiiiiiii Kait! I mean Naoto! I like your hat!

I came here to be a Warden too.

[This one, though? That's embarrassing. She didn't know anyone could be more energetic than Rise, who was like a hummingbird taking human form, but...] Really? I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you yet.

And thank you.

I'm Arkady! I just came in um...um...just now actually! I like this communicator. It's so much nicer than the wind up radios.

[Well now you've got her interest.] An old model here? Or something you used back home?

[Paperwork! Forms! Narvin's all over this, and likes you already (well, as much as he likes anyone that he doesn't know and is therefore automatically suspicious of).]

[So cooperative!]

Thank you.

I don't think I've heard of Gallifrey before. [The only pop culture she knows is public domain :( But she's totally watched "Professor What".]

I don't imagine you would have. It's a planet far away from Earth.

And before you ask, yes, I'm not human.

[*A*]

I'd been aware of the possibility of intelligent life outside our solar system, but I'm happy to see it confirmed.

You have a human appearance, correct? I hadn't seen anyone aboard who stood out in that particular way.

Consulting detective? You've got to be kidding me.

[Disbelief is one thing, actual skepticism another.]

Why lie about my identity?

[And that would be a sharpy, sharp laugh. STOP SENDING CHILDREN, BARGE. HE DOES NOT CARE FOR IT. :C]

I can name a hundred reasons. A consulting detective could think of at least a few.

It would be of no benefit to me to do so. Your reaction suggests you think it's an obvious lie, and why would I want to antagonize my fellow residents my first day here? I doubt half of them would be pleased to see someone else connected with the law.

[Welp, no way of knowing if this is just a clever means of swift information-gathering by an Inmate, but she's not releasing information that's not already public, so. Also, completely unphased by the age/career discrepancy because Tosh is a lifetime member of the Eh, I've Seen Weirder club.]

Previous profession: Xenolinguist and technical expert

Thank you, Sato-san. A pleasure.

...I'm curious, though. "Xenolinguist"? [She's not that good.]

[She hesitates a moment, then switches to Japanese. She...doesn't have a Kansai accent or speak the dialect for reasons known only to the Torchwood writers.]

Xenolinguistics involves the translation of alien languages. I worked for an agency which processed extraterrestrial flotsam and jetsam that appeared on Earth; documents and other data were often a part of that.

[And she continues the switch to Japanese. She was raised by old men and TV rather than the outside world, so doesn't use Kyoto-ben or have much of an accent. Unsurprisingly, though, she is calling herself "boku".]

I see. It's common on your Earth, then?

[She met Izanami a couple days ago, and Persona gods are aliens, but she still classifies that as "spirit world" rather than "extraterrestrial".]
