[The camera's propped up straight on a table and is pointed at an Asian kid with short black hair and a blue cabbie hat. The kid looks a little young to be on this ship of fools (fourteen? fifteen? sixteen?), but is sitting up politely and has a notepad out and a pen like this is going to be an Important Professional Conversation.]Good afternoon ( Read more... )

You're a consulting detective? At your age?

[Naoto is so used to this question by now it's not even that awkward.] Yes, part of a long line.

I understand it seems a little improbable.

Congratulations, certainly, then. How many cases have you worked on?

I came here after completing my sixteenth. [She's clearly proud here, and a little happy. That last one had been the most intense year of her life, and she wouldn't even have suspected it had a deeper layer on her own.]

Are you just curious, or do you have a professional stake in this?

obviously that's the point of icons 19centconstable September 10 2011, 21:10:54 UTC
Both, I suppose. I'm just a constable myself, but I work very closely with our station's detective.

Really? How long have you been at it?

I've been working with Detective Murdoch for nearly five years now.

I haven't heard the name before. Where are you from, Mr. ...? [She avoids the professional title. While she knows English, she doesn't know accents and he could be from anywhere.]

Crabtree. George Crabtree. And I'm from Toronto, Canada. 1897.

I'm afraid I wouldn't know it, then. A pleasure to meet you, in any case. [She bows her head, and then writes down a few words.]

What brought you here? [She's going to assume he's going to do the survey, because he's engaged with her.]

To be quite honest, I was excited by the prospect of traveling through space, mostly.

But I do like to think that I do right by others as well, and can be of help to those in need.

Hm. [She smiles a little bit at the thought of the space travel. This is going to be an experience.] Is that a common motive for arrival?

[The Admiral had offered her a wish, but she thought that her "I wish that I had a way to pay my friend back" was being fulfilled by coming aboard.]

I believe a deal with the Admiral is more usual.

[She's thinking hard about what that means for this place as she answers.] Not entirely what I expected.

Somehow I assumed there were more altruistic motives at work here. With this ship's stated goal, you'd think it would be more effective.
