[The camera's propped up straight on a table and is pointed at an Asian kid with short black hair and a blue cabbie hat. The kid looks a little young to be on this ship of fools (fourteen? fifteen? sixteen?), but is sitting up politely and has a notepad out and a pen like this is going to be an Important Professional Conversation.]Good afternoon ( Read more... )

[Welp, no way of knowing if this is just a clever means of swift information-gathering by an Inmate, but she's not releasing information that's not already public, so. Also, completely unphased by the age/career discrepancy because Tosh is a lifetime member of the Eh, I've Seen Weirder club.]

Thank you, Sato-san. A pleasure.

...I'm curious, though. "Xenolinguist"? [She's not that good.]

[She hesitates a moment, then switches to Japanese. She...doesn't have a Kansai accent or speak the dialect for reasons known only to the Torchwood writers.]

Xenolinguistics involves the translation of alien languages. I worked for an agency which processed extraterrestrial flotsam and jetsam that appeared on Earth; documents and other data were often a part of that.

[And she continues the switch to Japanese. She was raised by old men and TV rather than the outside world, so doesn't use Kyoto-ben or have much of an accent. Unsurprisingly, though, she is calling herself "boku".]

I see. It's common on your Earth, then?

[She met Izanami a couple days ago, and Persona gods are aliens, but she still classifies that as "spirit world" rather than "extraterrestrial".]

More common than a lot of other Earths represented here, I'll say that much, although there were very few agencies like mine. I worked near a rift in space-time that needed constant policing.

So, somewhere like we are now.

Only in the sense that we could sometimes expect visitors from different points of time and space. Cardiff itself was a fixed point on Earth, and the Rift was rarely if ever a deliberate destination in the way that the Barge is - for Wardens, at least.

I certainly didn't know where I was going. But I see your point. It must have been an eye-opening experience.

I meant that Wardens generally come here by choice and not by mistake, even if they aren't fully aware of what or where the Barge is.

May I ask what kind of cases you consulted on?

It varied. Sometimes my client was a private actor, others a prefectural police department who needed fresh eyes. The most recent was a serial kidnapping and murder investigation, but that one was... out of the ordinary. [understatement of the year.]
