Chapter 17

‘I’m still alive…,’ was the first thought that registered in Sakurai Sho’s mind when the darkness began to recede and he regained consciousness.

Then came the pain.

‘Ah… what’s that pain in my neck…?’

And the memories.

‘Damn, he’s a vampire!’

Sho needed a moment to collect his thoughts, to realize what had happened. His hand moved up to his throat and he felt a soft bandage beneath his fingertips.

Then he looked around.

Where was he?

But he couldn’t think about it for long, couldn’t try to understand, because from the corner of his eye he saw the door open slowly. When he saw the familiar figure on the threshold his panic came back full force.

Aiba Masaki.

Aiba Masaki, the vampire.

He was so afraid, he missed the look in Aiba’s eyes completely. He didn’t want to look at him, but couldn’t turn his eyes away either. He stared at Aiba’s face, as if he was in trance. His gaze unwavering.

“What… what do you want from me?” He said the first thing he could think of. His head was filled with confusion, and only half-formed questions. He had to swallow before he could pose the next question.

“Why did you bring me here?”

Once he had started the confusion in his mind gave way to actual questions.

“Do… do you want to save the rest of my blood for later? For another time?”

Having spoken those words, Sho realized what it was he was asking here. He realized what his fate would be.

He would die. Sooner or later he would die here, in the vampire’s house.

Aiba stayed silent, but Sho could see his gaze turn more and more bitter with each question. But he didn’t believe what he was seeing, didn’t believe it simply because Aiba was a vampire! A vampire!

And vampires couldn’t feel compassion, or guilt. Vampires were heartless, blood-drinking monsters. Sho had gotten to know them as such, had seen them act without remorse, had seen them kill without a second thought.

Sho knew enough about vampires.

“No… Sho-kun…,” Masaki’s careful voice suddenly reached his ear. “I never wanted to… hurt you…”

Then he lowered his head, cut eye contact with Sho.

“I… need to check your bandages… so the wound won’t become inflamed…,” he added quietly without looking up.

When Sho heard his words, a shiver ran down his spine.

“Stay where you are! Don’t come closer!” he said and quickly pulled his knees up to his chest. His whole body was beginning to shake.

“Of course that’s what you want! You’re a vampire! Not human!”

He shook his head, not caring about the blinding pain in his neck. He couldn’t let Aiba get close to him, that was unthinkable. He was… Aiba was…

“Stay away from me!” The fear was palpable in his voice, but he didn’t care. He was sure Aiba knew how scared he was anyway. And the vampire surely liked it.

But still Aiba took a step towards the bed.

And Sho was again caught in the vampire’s gaze, unable to turn away.

“Sho-kun… I… didn’t want that… to happen… I really didn’t…”

What was he saying?

“You’re lying! You’re lying!” Sho said at once, raising his voice and not taking his eyes off of Aiba, who took another step closer. He had nearly reached the bed Sho was sitting on.

His fear grew, became unstoppable, unbearable.

“Why didn’t you just kill me…? Why do I have to go through all of that again?” he croaked, his voice failing him. A lump formed in his throat again, crushed him from the inside, made him unable to breath, unable to swallow. Only made his fear grow.

“I saw your teeth… in front of the club…! You wanted to kill me then already! But there were too many people there, weren’t there? Someone would have seen you! That’s why you waited until I was alone and followed me into the alley! But the others were faster than you, weren’t they?”

Sho didn’t know how he had managed to get these words out. He could only watch as Aiba swallowed convulsively, then took a deep breath. Why was the former customer suddenly different? Why did he seem to be nervous? Suffering?

“No… Sho-kun, please, listen to me…”

He could even see Masaki bite his lower lip, could see how hard it was for him to find these words. Or was he just having a problem staying in control? Not to attack Sho again right here, right now, and take his remaining blood?

Another shiver ran down his spine, making him shake worse.

“I… followed you because I worried about you… I saw you on the street by chance… and I saw the men following you… I was afraid they would attack you… which they did…”

And every word Masaki said made Sho shake his head more violently. He didn’t believe him. He didn’t believe a word he said.

Aiba was a vampire. And vampires were evil!

“You’re lying! First you killed my brother… and now you want to kill me! Now it’s my turn.” As soon as he had spoken these words, Sho’s body relaxed and his breathing returned to normal, as if the last sentence had helped him understand the situation. Acceptance loosened his limbs, made him languid.

Sho knew deep down that he wouldn’t leave this place alive.

“Why didn’t you just kill me back then? Why did you make me watch my brother die?” he asked, decidedly calmer, almost indifferent, but still holding his head high.

His only answer was a confused look.

“What… are you talking about…? Your brother…?”

Silence ensued, while Masaki’s eyes grew more and more confused.

“I… I have never killed anyone, Sho-kun…”

But as if he hadn’t heard the words, Sho’s panic was replaced by despair. Tears filled his eyes.

“First… my parents and then my brother! You killed them all…,” quietly left Sho’s lips. Then he pressed them together tightly and tried to keep his tears at bay. But he was unsuccessful.

“Only I was allowed to escape… Why? Did you want to play with me? Did you follow me for 18 years to kill me now, like this?”

Everything had come back to him as soon as he had seen Aiba’s teeth. He was standing there just like he had been standing there back then. Silent. Unmoving.

“I don’t understand… I just don’t understand…” Sho sniffled. Silent tears ran down his cheeks and chin, then dropped onto the bedspread.

And Aiba stayed as he was, unmoving. He bit his lower lip hard and looked at Sho in disbelief.

“Your… your family was… killed by a vampire…? 18 years ago…?”

And suddenly he looked as if he had just realized something terrible.

“Sho-kun… please believe me, I have never killed anyone…”

Why did the vampire suddenly move again? Why were is hands touching the bed, why was he pleading with him?

“Please, Sho-kun…”

Why did Aiba Masaki, the vampire, suddenly look as if he was close to tears?

“Don’t pretend you don’t know…” Sho’s voice was nothing more than a whisper, being near Aiba frightened him.

“You… you wanted to… kill me, too…?”

Something else rose inside Sho, something he couldn’t put in words yet, but it lessened his panic and even drove away his indifference. Sho didn’t want to die. He wanted to get out of here! Alive!

At the same time Aiba looked less and less threatening.

But that couldn’t be true! Sho had to fight against it. He couldn’t trust him. Not a vampire, a killer-

But how many vampires had he met in his life?

Was it possible that his bad experiences had made him prejudiced against all vampires, when not all of them were truly bad?

But this vampire had attacked him! Bitten him! Almost killed him!

Sho didn’t know what to think, what to believe.

“No, Sho, no… I didn’t want to kill you. I swear.”

Masaki’s voice shook while his hands slowly caressed the bedspread and he moved closer to Sho.

“I… I tried… I wanted… I wanted you to leave… because… I knew, I would lose control… because… I had lost too much blood…”

As if Sho’s mind was rebelling against the thought, the host scoffed and turned away from Aiba. He couldn’t believe him! Under no circumstances!

“How do I know that you’re not lying? You showed your teeth at the club already! And you hadn’t lost blood then.”

That’s how it had happened! And that was why he couldn’t believe Aiba’s words! Who knew what else the vampire would otherwise do to him.

“Maybe… you’re just saving me for later…”

As if the topic was the trigger for it, Sho’s panic came back with a vengeance as soon as these words left his mouth, his face was twisted into a grimace and hot tears fell from his eyes again.

“I don’t want to die! It hurt so much…!”

But the words seemed to have pushed Aiba over the edge. Suddenly two arms wrapped themselves around Sho and pulled him close to the vampire’s trembling body.

Sho couldn’t breathe.

But he didn’t feel the pain in his neck, he didn’t see Aiba’s teeth, didn’t hear him hiss. He heard something else instead.

“You… won’t die, Sho… you won’t die…,” Aiba said tearfully.

“Please… please believe me… I never wanted to hurt you… Never! I’m so sorry, Sho…“

The host felt Aiba lean his head against his chest, heard him sniffle quietly. Then he felt his shirt get wet.

“M-masaki-san…?”

Another sob escaped Aiba, confusing Sho even more. What was happening here? What was he meant to think after this rollercoaster ride of panic, indifference and confusion?

“I’m so sorry…”

What was he meant to think about those words? Hadn’t his life been shaped by his bad, but reasonable opinion of vampires? And now one of them was lying in his arms, crying.

Because he had hurt him.

“Believe me… Sho… believe me, I didn’t want to hurt you…”

Could people change in 18 years?

Or was it possible that it hadn’t been Aiba who had killed his family?

“I’ve never killed anyone… and I don’t plan to change that… I can’t…,” Aiba sobbed.

Silence.

Sho tried to collect his thoughts. He knew he had to say something, anything.

“I… it… Masaki-san, what do you want me to say…?” he said hesitantly.

Another sob could be heard before Aiba looked up again and fixed Sho with red-rimmed eyes.

“Believe me… believe that I don’t want to hurt you…”

Sho was nodding before he had even had time to really think about it.

“Alright…”

Aiba’s face lightened up at once. Despite his red-rimmed eyes, he now looked a lot more friendly. As if the vampire had been waiting for these words, as if they had saved him from his guilt.

Sho could only accept the situation as it was. What was the point of fighting against the vampires words when they seemed more and more believable anyway?

“What… What happens now? Will I become… a vampire, too?”

The question stood between them, suffocating Sho and making him more and more afraid. Before now the situation hadn’t allowed him to pose the question, that’s why it seemed so sudden now.

But in answer Aiba’s lips only stretched into a smile. He quickly shook his head and lifted his hands to Sho’s neck, slowly beginning to unravel the bandage.

And something in the atmosphere surrounding them had changed.

Something was different, all of a sudden.

“Masaki-san… for how long… for how long have you been a vampire…? You don’t… look that old.” Sho didn’t know what made him ask, he only had the feeling that he was allowed to ask now. And suddenly he wanted to know.

The vampire stayed silent for a moment, gently rubbing ointment on Sho’s wound.

“I was… 24 when I was turned. That’s why I don’t look that old…”

Aiba paused again, but Sho knew that his question hadn’t been answered completely yet.

“That… was nearly 800 years ago…”

Sho could only gasp. 800 years sounded like a long long time. And it surely was an incredibly long time. The things he had seen and done in that time. Didn’t he ever get tired of living?

There were people who developed a death wish after only a few years, weren’t there?

But Sho decided not to say anything about that just yet. The vampire’s voice had let him know unmistakably that the question was alright, but that Aiba didn’t want to say more about it.

But there were other things the host needed to know in order to conquer his fear of Aiba completely.

“And… why did you react the way you did just now? I thought… vampires lived off of human blood…don’t they?”

Aiba’s hands stopped moving and for a second Sho thought he had asked the wrong question. But Aiba had only finished changing his bandage without Sho noticing and now he lowered his hands and put away the ointment.

Then soft eyes were turned on Sho and he asked himself how something so terrible could be hidden behind such a beautiful face.

“We live off blood. But we don’t have to kill humans,” Aiba said curtly and once again lifted his hand to Sho’s neck.

“You should get some more rest, Sho-kun… Your body needs a lot of sleep, so you’ll get better soon. Alright…?”

Why was the hand on his neck warm? Shouldn’t vampires be cold? Dead?

“Hai…”

Aiba got up off the bed and waited for Sho to lie down. Then he pulled the blanket over him.

“If you need something… call me… I’ll be here.”

Why did the vampire’s voice sound so soft? Why was it so soothing? Hadn’t he been deadly afraid of him not that long ago?

“Hai…”

There it was again, Aiba’s soft smile. And it affected Sho at once.

“I’ll take care of you…”

Sho took a deep breath and nodded.

“Hai!”

Nino put down the phone. He had heard enough. He carelessly threw the mobile to the side, where it landed on his bed with a dull thud.

A frustrated sigh left his throat before he took a deep breath.

‘I’m sorry, Satoshi-kun. But I have to kill your best friend now.’
