Chapter 5
Ohno slowly opened his eyes, just to make sure that his mind wasn’t playing tricks on him. He needed a moment to recognize the newcomer in the club’s dim light, but in reality he had already recognized his familiar voice.
‘That… really was…’
The man came closer and stepped into the light to be perfectly recognizable.
‘…Ninomiya-san…’
“Eh…? What do you want, young’un…?” an angry voice made itself suddenly heard next to him. “Watch what you’re saying! I paid Satoshi-chan for tonight, so you better piss off before I get angry!”
The panic that had accumulated in his body because of the unpleasant nearness of his customer and had then deflated upon Ninomiya’s arrival, took hold of the young host again.
Ohno had to watch the man next to him suddenly jump to his feet and walk towards the newcomer, his eyebrows creased in anger and his arms held out as if to make a grab for him.
‘Ninomiya-san…!’
The older customer reared up in front of the young man and grabbed him by the neck. Ohno held his breath.
On the one hand he was really happy not to have the dirty hands on his body any longer, but … this man was touching Ninomiya! He had grabbed him by the neck roughly and pulled him forward!
The young host could only watch, could only stare at the two men in front of him; the panic inside him was too powerful. On top of that there was now the fear that something would happen to Ninomiya. And the question of why the young man had even intervened in the first place…
Had he really called Ohno ‘his host’ just now…?
The derisive grin that suddenly appeared on Ninomiya’s face brought Ohno right back to the present, made him watch the two men in surprise. In the blink of an eye the situation was reversed. Now Ninomiya was holding Kobayashi roughly by the neck and glaring at him fiercely.
But how had he done that? Ohno hadn’t even seen him move.
“Maybe you should watch what you’re saying!” Ninomiya hissed. The smile was nowhere to be seen, every nice expression had vanished, replaced by a look of pure hatred. “From now on Satoshi-kun is my host, do you understand? And now you’d better leave before I get angry!”
‘His … host…’ Ohno didn’t know what exactly he should think about this. It was the first time he had ever heard a customer in this club declare him to be his host so fiercely.
‘Is… is he serious…?’
Ninomiya strengthened his hold, grabbed the other customer more tightly and pushed him toward the exit.
“Get out of here!” his voice rang out, deep and angry.
“And if you want to complain, pay the boss my compliments!” he added friendlier, almost amused and the - for him - more typical grin finally reappeared on Ninomiya’s face. Not a second later he turned to Ohno and looked at him apologetically. At least the host interpreted his look that way.
“Sorry, Satoshi-kun…” Ninomiya’s lips formed a friendly smile, “but you didn’t look as if you were enjoying yourself. And I somehow just couldn’t watch that…”
Having spoken the words, the young customer sat down next to Ohno the very next moment, fished a couple of notes from his pocket with a nimble movement of his fingers and pushed them into Ohno’s hand.
“Here, the tips I lost for you…,” he said with an amused undertone to his beautiful voice. Silent laughter followed.
Ohno could only look at the young man for a long moment, without an expression in his eyes, without a word leaving his mouth. Ninomiya had really come back here, to him, had just saved him from the unpleasant touch of a customer and was now simply sitting there, smiling pleasantly. Quickly the host shook his head when he felt the money in his hand. That was too much, he really couldn’t accept that!
“No, that’s your money …! I can’t take it!” he managed to get out, while holding the notes out, prompting the young man to take them back. But Ninomiya made no move to take them back.
“It’s my job to entertain the people here! But somehow … it just didn’t want to work with this man,” he tried again to convince the customer that what he was doing really wasn’t right. At the same time he also tried to make it seem as if he hadn’t had these problems with almost every customer up until now - even though Ohno slowly got the feeling that Ninomiya had long since seen through him on this point.
“Keep it… otherwise I’ll feel guilty!” was the grinning answer to his try at persuasion and the host could do nothing but redirect his gaze with a small smile. It might be him feeling guilty now, but Ohno knew somewhere deep down that he needed the money more than anything. Especially since he had once again ruined any hope of getting paid tonight with his behaviour towards his last customer.
For a moment silence reined, but the knowledge that Ninomiya apparently didn’t mind it calmed the young host, made him not search nervously and desperately for a topic for conversation. But suddenly he remembered something that he had forgotten because of all the chaos he had just gone through, a question that had taken up residence in his head a long time ago and was only waiting for Ninomiya’s answer.
“N-Ninomiya-san!” Quickly he looked back at him, looked the young man firmly in the eyes.
“Hai…?” Smiling the customer looked back, gave Ohno a friendly look.
“When you left the last time… I … I thought I’d never see you again! Did I do something wrong?”
Now it was finally out there, the question that had tortured him so much and hadn’t let him rest the last month. And now he finally had the chance to get rid of it, even if he had to admit to himself that he was somewhat scared to hear the long sought-after answer.
“Ah…” Ninomiya looked surprised by the question, deliberated for a moment before he smiled again softly. “No, no. That wasn’t about you at all.”
His smile got bigger now, kinder.
“I was just… having a bad day.” Having said these words, Ninomiya sank back into the couch, crossed his arms behind his head and kept looking at Ohno, who wondered about the pause in the young man’s words, but was more than relieved after hearing his answer.
Ninomiya wasn’t sick of him after all!
A comforted sigh escaped the young host’s mouth and he, too, sank back into the soft couch. He had racked his brain searching for what had gone wrong between them for nothing the past month, but that wasn’t important anymore now. Ninomiya hadn’t left him and seemed to still like Ohno’s company. Or did he?
“You’re not really comfortable with your job, are you?” an unanticipated question came from Ninomiya’s mouth, left his lips softly, but the host didn’t notice the tone in this moment. Hesitating, he looked to the customer after being asked such a sensitive question.
‘Is this … a test…?’
He swallowed, thought for a moment about what he should answer, even though it had been clear from the start.
“N-no! It’s a good job!” he said quickly, trying to sound as convincing as possible. If his boss heard anything else, he would be kicked out immediately.
But almost as he had expected, Ninomiya laughed quietly, having apparently seen through his little white lie. Ohno had always had problems with seeming convincing, if he himself wasn’t convinced of what he was saying.
“Sorry. I shouldn’t ask questions like that, should I? What else could you say?!” And once again Ohno only saw an amused smile that made him lower his head and shrug. Ninomiya was right, a customer really wasn’t supposed to ask something like that. But a customer wasn’t supposed to just sit next to his host, smiling and laughing every now and then but not doing anything else, either. A customer also didn’t suddenly order food and a good bottle of wine again.
“I hope you’re still hungry after what happened just now…”
Ohno could only nod lightly and whisper a quiet “Hai, thanks”. Too much had happened all at once, Ninomiya had appeared so suddenly, had looked so angry when he had argued with the other customer. And now his gaze was full of tenderness, as if nothing had happened. Not to mention that the young man was just there.
Just there, with him, with Ohno Satoshi. He sat next to him, smiled, obviously waited for the waiter to bring the food he had just ordered and was just there.
And much too soon he was gone again.
“Alright, I don’t want you to do overtime because of me, Satoshi-kun.” Ohno could only watch Ninomiya get up and touch his shoulder with his hand in a short, soft motion, while saying these words. It was the only time they had touched that night.
But he had only just arrived; they had only eaten and talked for a short while. But Ohno had to admit that he must have lost track of time, Ninomiya had been with him for a few hours by now. The club would close soon and it was slowly getting light outside.
“Erm… overtime with you isn’t too bad,” he replied, smiling shyly, but in vain, his customer was already putting on his jacket and getting ready to leave.
A smile was Ninomiya’s answer before he took some notes from his pocket and put them down on the table. A generous tip. Much too generous.
“Get home safely. And I’ll see you soon…”
And suddenly the atmosphere in the club felt overwhelmingly lonely.
Two weeks had passed and Ninomiya hadn’t appeared again. Today in particular Ohno was loath to drag himself to work; he was a lot later than usual because he had had to stay longer at his daytime job. Luckily his boss knew about his other job, or he would have been kicked out for being late a long time ago.
Nevertheless this didn’t change the bad mood he was in when he stepped into the club.
‘Maybe Ninomiya will be here tonight…’ The thought alone made him smile encouragingly again, even though lately he had had the same thought every night. ‘He’s so nice and so good-looking. Not like the other guys here…’
Slowly the host made his way to his usual place at the bar, sat down on one of the stools with a sigh and let his gaze roam through the club disinterestedly. His eyes stopped at a table not that far away from him, watched Sho close the distance between himself and his customer with an enticing smile.
‘Sho-kun has so many customers…’
His eyes moved on and came to rest on another familiar face.
‘Is that…?’
Ohno narrowed his eyes, tried to see who it was that sat back there. It wasn’t easy because a host had just sat down on the customer’s lap.
But when the host changed his position, he could see the customer’s face completely.
Ohno swallowed convulsively.
‘Ninomiya-san…?’
And he had to watch the foreign host start kissing the customer, his customer, eagerly.
