Chapter 6

‘Ninomiya-san…? He’s here?’

Ohno’s gaze turned sadder the longer he watched customer and host, until he had to finally turn away, having long since seen enough. Ninomiya had kissed the host back, willingly and demandingly, had touched him, touched him like the other customers in this club did. Apparently Ninomiya-san was only here for this one reason as well.

A dejected sigh left his lips while Ohno leaned back against the bar lightly. Sho had been right after all. Ninomiya really wasn’t as nice and friendly as he always pretended to be.

Disappointment slowly took hold of his body, filled his chest uncomfortably. But paradoxically the crushing feeling left behind only emptiness, an emptiness he couldn’t explain but that felt more and more unbearable.

The ever growing emotional chaos made him look back up again, made him turn his gaze back on Ninomiya. And he had to watch how the unknown host stepped up his game, placing his lips on Ninomiya’s neck, kissing and nuzzling it - and how his customer seemed to be enjoying himself.

‘Not a pleasant sight… not pleasant at all…’

Ohno watched Ninomiya throw back his head; he could practically feel how much the young man liked being touched.

‘He only wants what they all want. And I couldn’t give it to him…’

Regardless of what Ohno did, he just couldn’t make himself look away, couldn’t stop staring at the two.

‘So that’s it, then…’

The young, inexperienced host’s mouth opened slightly, his eyes widened while he continued watching. He watched the strange host start moving his hips against his customer’s, watched Ninomiya make small sounds of pleasure that made Ohno shudder.

And then Ninomiya lifted his head, opened his eyes a little - and looked straight at Ohno.

But at the same time the other host moved his hips again, pressed them harder against the young man’s own hips. And Ohno got to see the full effects of this touch in Ninomiya’s eyes. Arousal.

The young host’s cheeks reddened as he met this look. Ohno swallowed hard.

‘That’s why he’s here… because he wants to let loose once in a while like all the other guys.’

A second later Ninomiya had closed his eyes again. But he had to have seen him, he had looked right into his eyes after all, he knew that Ohno was watching. And Ohno refused to look away, why shouldn’t Ninomiya know that he was still here - still watching.

At the same time the young host realised that those thoughts were wrong, that there was no reason for him to feel disappointed.

‘I’m not his personal host after all… and even then, he could still have fun with others.’ But even these admonishing thoughts could not stop a mortified sigh from escaping his lips while he prepared himself mentally for the greedy old men that would be his only company from now on.

The thudding music in the club boomed in his ears, underscoring the picture before his eyes. Ninomiya had thrown his head back again and Ohno could almost feel how much he liked everything his host did. But then something changed, changed more quickly than expected, and Ninomiya was suddenly untangling himself from his host, standing up and walking away. Directly toward Ohno.

‘What’s going on now? Is he leaving already?’ was all the young host could think before Ninomiya came to a stop right in front of him, looking at him with his usual soft smile. As if nothing had happened.

“Satoshi-kun, good evening,” the young man greeted him in a friendly tone, “It’s a pity that you didn’t arrive sooner. Sadly I have to leave again now. But I’m sure we’ll meet again soon…”

And he kept smiling as if nothing had happened, as if he had not just been with the other host. But he had to know that Ohno had seen everything.

“Hai, of course,” he answered quickly and even stood up from his seat. Hesitantly he nodded and in return received a wink from Ninomiya.

A moment later the customer had already disappeared from the club. For a few seconds Ohno silently watched the dark-haired man leave while an important thought slowly took hold of him.

‘He’s just … like all the others.’

Ohno hadn’t doubted for a moment that the evening wouldn’t get any better. Shortly after Ninomiya had left, his boss had come up to him and lectured him because he was just standing around and because every time he had a customer, the customer complained about him afterwards.
Of course Ohno had had to remain silent during all of this and at the same time admit to himself, that his boss’s accusations were true. Unfortunately his boss had gotten so angry during the lecture that he had sent Ohno to the kitchen, where he had had to wash the dishes for the rest of the night.

Only when he left the club later that night, exhausted and fed up with the world, did he see that it had started to snow. Snow…

Soft snow flakes fell down on him when he stepped out of the building, everything around him was white… as if a white blanket had been thrown over houses and streets. The snow seemed to light up the streets, making everything glow faintly in the darkness of the night.

It was a beautiful sight - Ohno had fallen completely in love with the snow. But at the same time dark thoughts assailed the young host, because he knew that it would be desperately cold in his home now. His family was so bad off financially that they couldn’t even afford reasonable heating anymore.

Nevertheless the walk home was nice and quiet; the snow muted every sound and covered the normally teeming city with a shroud of pleasant silence. For the first time in a long time Ohno could really relax, could feel how he started to feel comfortable in the soft snow.

But when he reached his apartment his mood quickly changed.

Before he had even opened the door he could hear his parents’ loud, angry voices and suddenly he felt the immense urge to just turn around and stay outside in the snow. But Ohno knew that that wasn’t possible, knew that he had to go home and sleep in order to be ready for his other job tomorrow.

With a heavy heart he opened the door and stepped into the bright but cold apartment. Why were his parents even still awake?

‘Lately they’ve been fighting more and more often. Even though now is the time we really need to stick together. Alone none of us will get through this...’ The thought pained him and he lowered his gaze to the floor sadly.

“I’m back…” Ohno tried his best to smile happily, he really did, but when he saw that his parents didn’t return his smile even a little bit it vanished again.

‘I hate it when they’re like this.’

And it didn’t get better. Ohno was too low-spirited and there was too much tension in the room for him to have a normal conversation with his parents. And what had to happen, happened; they goaded each other into a vehement fight.

“Just look at this dump!! We can’t afford anything anymore! No food, no car, no heating!! Soon they’ll cut off our electricity, too! Soon we’ll be reduced to living under a bridge!!” his father’s loud voice echoed through the room. To Ohno it was nothing more than a dull thudding at this point, the actual words didn’t reach him anymore. Only one thought filled his head, a thought that was so important that it seemed to be the only right thing to do at the moment. Even though he would regret it later.

‘I have to get out of here… away from everything’

And now he was standing here, outside in the cold with only the snow to keep him company, the snow that wasn’t as pleasant now as it had been on his way home. Now that he wasn’t even wearing a coat, he was freezing in his thin shirt and battered slippers. But he hadn’t noticed how far from his apartment he had run, had not realised what he was doing, where he was running to because of his anger and despair because of his family’s situation.

The freezing air burned in his lungs and made him gasp for breath. Exhausted and breathing heavily Ohno leaned on a cold wall with no idea what to do now.

‘It’s so… cold…’

He could do nothing against the tremors that ran through his body. Not even crossing his arms over his torso and kneeling down helped against the cold. He just wasn’t wearing enough clothes.

The tremors got worse and he slowly but surely started to get wet as well as cold. The snow was melting and starting to soak through his slippers and the thin material of his clothes. Ohno was freezing more by the minute.

‘Damn… Why did you run out without a second thought anyway?’

A loud cough was ripped from his throat, making his straighten up a little.

And then from one moment to the next he felt warmth envelop him. Something heavy was draped over his shoulders and kept away the cold.

“And so we meet again…”

Slowly Ohno lifted his head, looked questioningly from the warm coat covering him to his saviour - and needed a moment to realise that he was really standing in front of him.

“Ninomiya-san…”
