Chapter 2

Ohno Satoshi felt the panic engulf his whole body. He couldn’t place his customer’s laughter, but he knew all too well what would happen now. Ninomiya wouldn’t wait long to go see his boss. Ohno would lose his job and would most likely have to pay for dry-cleaning the ruined coat. How was he supposed to do that? And above all: What was he supposed to do now? Ohno had really no idea.

And that seemed to be written all over his face, as there was no other explanation for his customer’s next action.

He suddenly noticed that two hands were put on his shoulders. Ohno didn’t know what was happening to him, but this first, light contact with his customer’s body sent shivers running down his back, something he had never felt before. He shuddered, because he couldn’t tell if it was a good feeling. But as sudden as the feeling had begun it was gone again and he tried not to dwell on it.

He looked at Ninomiya uncertainly - only to be met with a bemused smile.

“Nervousness, right? Very annoying, don’t you think?”

Ohno thought he must have heard wrong. Ninomiya had spoken that sentence with such a relaxed voice; it was more than out of place. Shouldn’t he be angry…?

But that wasn’t the end of the strange events. Ohno could now watch his customer take off his coat without hesitation and put it on the chair next to him. The host watched his movements with big eyes. Then Ninomiya reached for the wine glass, put it upright again and took the bottle out of Ohno’s hands. Ohno hadn’t even been aware that he was still holding onto it.

Smiling softly, the customer took over the pouring of the wine.

For a moment Ohno could only stare, before he finally found his voice after the whole mishap.

“I’ll pay for the coat!” he blurted out. But he had to swallow at once when he realised what he had said. As if he could afford that! But he couldn’t afford losing his job either…

Ninomiya looked from Ohno to his coat and then back to Ohno seriously. Would he get angry now? Ohno tensed again.

But like it had a minute ago, only laughter spilled over the customer’s lips, quiet, but loud enough for the host to hear without effort.

“I can just barely afford the dry-cleaning…” Ninomiya was saying. His lips formed a cute grin, before he continued talking, “And now stop worrying about it and eat. Your food will be cold soon.”

“H-hai…” Ohno nodded slowly, while he stuttered through his answer. His gaze was fixed on his customer once again, nervous and tense; he watched as he reached for his chopsticks and began to eat. He watched Ninomiya eat for a moment longer until he suddenly lifted his head and fixed the host with an indefinable look, he was almost staring. Embarrassed, Ohno bowed his head and looked at the small portion of food lying in front of him.

Disappointment began to take hold of him.

‘Listen to yourself, Satoshi… this is never going to work out. Be glad that he’s still acting calm and don’t ruin everything!’ he admonished himself and slowly began to eat. Anxious not to eat the food too fast in order to be full sooner, he took his time. This would be the last meal he would get this day.

But he was finished sooner than he had thought, not even a crumb was left on his plate and he smiled shyly at Ninomiya. Somewhere inside he began to hope that he hadn’t put his customer off completely. Yes, he really began to hope that Ninomiya would come back after he left the club tonight.

The customer reached for his glass of red wine, a small grin on his lips. Ohno wondered what he was thinking about. Maybe his stupid mishap? But when he saw Ninomiya bringing the glass to his lips and taking a small sip elegantly, he realised how rude he himself was being once again. He quickly took his own glass, brought it to his lips a lot less elegantly and nearly spilled the liquid again. Happy that he hadn’t had another accident, he sipped his wine and scrunched up his nose right away. Bitter.

He tried to conjure a smile again as quickly as possible, but when he heard his customer laugh, almost giggle, quietly again, he knew that his reaction hadn’t escaped his customer’s notice.

“The wine’s not your thing? Too bitter, ne?” a bemused voice reached his ears, immediately followed by more laughter.

“It’s one of those things you have to get used to.”

The words didn’t leave Ohno unaffected; he felt his cheeks heat slightly. A nervous, slightly crooked grin stretched his lips but disappeared again quickly when he heard his customer’s next words:

“When I first drank a wine this good, I spat it out right away. Everybody looked at me askant!”

Ohno looked at him then, a little surprised after all, he had never had a customer who had talked about himself like this. But he had noticed earlier that Ninomiya was different than the other customers. He just had to make the best of it, now. But how he was supposed to do that, Ohno couldn’t even guess at that moment.

Soon after, Ninomiya stood up, seemingly ready to leave. Ohno stood up as well, as it was the polite thing to do. If things had gone the way he wanted, he would have grabbed his customer’s arm and pulled him down next to him again. Somehow he didn’t want his customer to leave him, didn’t want his customer to go and leave Ohno at the mercy of the other customers again. A quiet sigh escaped him, but luckily it remained unheard.

“Well then, Satoshi-kun. I thank you for your company.” Soft words were followed by a charming smile. But Ohno didn’t have time to answer the polite and at the same time nice words, because Ninomiya suddenly leaned forward and came close. Very close.

Close enough that the host could hear his own heart beat loudly in his chest.

He only vaguely noticed that his customer pushed something into his hand, he was too excited, too intoxicated by his sudden nearness.

“Here, keep this to yourself. I know that your tips are usually subtracted from your wages.”

A quick wink brought Ohno back to the present. His heart didn’t slow down immediately, but he slowly noticed his surroundings again. The loud bustle in the club, the low music and most of all Ninomiya’s last words before he turned around, reached for his coat and disappeared:

“I’ll see you soon, ne?”
